    best technique/sound for recording guitars

The general rule-of-thumb with mic'ing guitar cabinets is to record them dry (no reverb, no effects). Processing can always be added later and tweaked until mixdown time. If the effect is integral to the sound and is difficult and/or impossible to add as an aux send or plugin, then record with...

Have any of you used the Alesis SR-16 Drum Module?

Jimmy_LD didn't mention how he wanted to use the machine. You can program drum sequences in the machine itself and use it for rehearsals and such. This will yield acceptable results - for the price anyway. You can also use it as a MIDI controller to program drum parts in your software...

    Poweramp recommendations? V-Amp Pro

Check out this new product from Harry Kolbe: http://www.atomicamps.com This is an all tube power section and speaker designed specifically for digital amp modelers (V-Amp, POD and the like). It apparently got rave reviews in Mix Magazine although I can't actually find the review :o I had...

Thanks for the link ssscientist! BTW, I am still running OS9. I started playing around with Native Instruments Battery. I was able to suss getting a few .wav samples into the program and have my MIDI drum part trigger the sample. I have to play around with mapping editor so that each...

Drum samples w/ Cubase and Boss DR-660

"But once the drum parts are in the computer, it opens up a world of possibilities for using other sounds as subsitute kick, snare, hh and so on." Yes - that's the question I meant to ask, but came out wrong! I'd use the DR-660 to compose the drum part. Now, once I have the drum part in my...

    Modeling thingys

I too prefer that slightly overdriven crunch tone that's so hard to obtain with these modelling devices. That said, I have been quite pleased with the Behringer V-Amp2. It does cleaner textures better than POD and company (IMHO). It does not 'feel' like a real amp, but it you can get past it...

Drum samples w/ Cubase and Boss DR-660

I relatively new to MIDI drums, but I've been enjoying some success and am looking for a way to augment my current setup. I'm using the DR-660 to create drum parts in Cubase and have them played back to the DR-660. In other words - the DR-660 is both the controller and the sound module. In...

Cheapest, best way to record bass

The original ART Tube MP (now selling for around $50.00) isn't a tremendous mic preamp, but it makes for a pretty mean bass DI. Pick up a dbx 163x compressor on ebay for about $30.00 bucks and you've got a very respectable tone path.

    Mid-Level Studio Reverb Units...

How about the Digitech TSR24S? It is a multi-effects processor, but it's reverbs are first-rate. At an ebay price of around $125.00, it might be an attractive option for you. Read the Sound on Sound review...

    Mic Pres and Replacement Tubes

I changed the tube in my ART Tube MP several times (JAN Philips 12AX7WA, JAN GE 5751 and Tungsram 12AX7). Be careful though, I accidentally pulled the gain pots too far from the circuit board - now the signal cuts in and out and distorts. Before I screwed it up, I didn't notice a significant...

1/4" unbalanced output to TRS or XLR balanced input

The outputs from my Gina 20 soundcard are 1/4" unbalanced. My monitors accept both TRS and XLR balanced inputs and/or RCA unbalanced inputs. I'm currently using a simple guitar cable for now and I'm not experiencing any noise or hum, but what would y'all suggest for this configuration...

    Mic modification question for Marik

Hi Marik, Awhile back you posted a thread where you modified a Nady TCM 1050 tube microphone. You also posted sound files comparing the results. Your modification sounded excellent! I have this mic and have been relatively pleased with it. A few questions if I may: 1. How much of an...
