    Cymbal mixing

Given the sound of the actual "drums", I'd wonder if the drummer is playing with mallets. When played well, a mallet can give you a "shimmering" tone from the cymbals by eliminating the "hard" attack...

Just how do you get a record deal

You should just play and record for the love of it, money and famed would be a side effect! Sez who? Suppose you simply want money and fame; are you not allowed to do it by making music? I believe God gave me the ability to play drums. But I read the Bible every night, and while there's a lot...

    Organics vs. MDI

I agree that it is difficult to create a convincing drum track using MIDI, even if real samples are being used. I could take a totally crappy track of MIDI drums and play it for any kid in a mall and ask them what instrument it is, and they would say "drums". So how is that not convincing?

    Kick drum hole

Got the hole in my kick at 8:00 'cause that's where I wanted it. And in response to somebody on the thread...I took the resonant heads off all of my toms because I got tired of having to tune two heads. Also, you get a little more projection, but I don't really care about that...

G string Issues... Or any kind of string....

How do you stretch the crap out them Zaph? You don't need to "stretch the crap out them", just moderate stretching will do. Do the initial tuning. Then pull each string out away from the body an inch or so. You'll be able to "feel" how far to pull it...you don't have to stretch it too much...

    Cymbal mixing

Listened to it on my notebook... What little bit of cymbal I could actually pick out...+1 on phasing issues...kinda reminded me of the cymbal phasing on The Raspberrys' "Go All The Way"... I could live with the phasing issues on "Go All The Way" because it was a totally kick-ass song. But the...

    Organics vs. MDI

... but all these 'samples' are just that 'samples,' they aint the real thing. Are they not "real" samples? Are they any less "real" than an electric guitar? How many among the great unwashed masses do you think even care? If it's good music, it's good music, no matter how it comes to be...

    Sound Card AND Interface?

You will see the terms "sound card" and "interface" used synonymously, and I suppose on some level they are. But I, and a lot of others, think of "sound card" as the cheesy "beeps and bleeps" thing that comes in your computer, while we think of an "interface" as something used to give...

Question about Line in settings: +4 vs. -10

Basically +4 is used by pro gear while -10 is used by consumer gear (such as "stereo" gear). Check the manual for the equipment you intend to plug in for the proper operating level...

Sapphire 6 with Presonus Tube Pre.

It doesn't matter whether phantom power is on or off on the Sapphire 6 USB, if you are connecting the preamp properly... The second part of that statement is very important...

    Recorded sound very low volume

How are you recording your sound (mic, guitar, keyboard, VI's)? If other than VI's how are you connecting your mic, guitar, or keyboard; what are the connectors on the cable and where are you plugging them in on your mixer? If you are using a mic, is it a condenser mic? If it is a condenser...

    Using condensers with tascam 424

Just to be 100% correct, you don't need a preamp; you need a source of phantom power. True, many preamps provide phantom power and would serve for what you are trying to do, but there are also stand-alone phantom power supplies. So, you could use a stand-alone phantom power supply and still...

    Mic Preamp - Quick Question

The reason I answered why I did regarding phantom power is because there are stand-alone boxes out there that do nothing but provide phantom power. So, one cannot make an assumption that just because there is phantom power there is a preamp. I'm trying to avoid setting up a three page thread...

    Mic Preamp - Quick Question

In this context, the issue of phantom power is irrelevant. The only time you would need a stand-alone preamp would be if your interface does not have one. So, what you need to determine is if your Apogee Duet has built-in preamps. Phantom power is only required if you are using condenser mics.

Mic preamp - compressor - interface. Cables?

So, are you saying that the preamps in the Tascam US-1641 totally suck? If so, how do you know? Have you ever heard a recording made through one? You didn't mention what DAW you will be using. Have you ever used it before? Are you sure that the compressor plugins included with your DAW are not...

Mixer output to headphone amp? One ear?

Assuming 6.3 mm equals 1/4", the cable on ebay you referenced would work. What you want is a 1/4" TRS by 1/4" TRS cable. This is also commonly known as a "stereo" cable...
