Tascam US-1800 not working. Need Advice ASAP

Hey guys, so here's an update. Because I am in a pinch and rather desperate, I ran off to go buy a new one, thinking I could try to get warranty on this malfunctioning one(as it hasn't been a year), but at the very least I could continue working. After arriving home with the new unit, I first...

Tascam US-1800 not working. Need Advice ASAP

Just now it stopped working again, even with the light still on, no sound. Now the light is off again. Oy vey. I'm on a bad streak of things not working right. I'm going out for a cigarette. Thanks so much to all who have advice

Tascam US-1800 not working. Need Advice ASAP

Thanks for reply! Yeah I've tried all those things. Turning it off and turning it on has worked in the past when I've had similar issues, but this time it seems much much worse. Has been malfunctioning for days, and this afternoon, no matter how many times I tried it wouldn't register at all...

Tascam US-1800 not working. Need Advice ASAP

Hi all. My Tascam Us-1800 has ceased working somehow. The USB light does not stay on(is it supposed to? I don't quite remember) and all that can be heard is some weird fluctuating buzzing noises coming from headphones/speakers. My computer has popped up messages saying something like "the device...

Seeking Practical Monitors for Mixing in a DIY Setting

Hey thanks for the reply! A guy at a store I talked to said the Yamaha HS5's had more bass response than the Yorkvillle's(as far as 5's go), and from what I listended to he was right. I arranged to take them home to test them out. Still not sure though. Having a bit of trouble getting a read on...

Seeking Practical Monitors for Mixing in a DIY Setting

Thanks a lot for the replies guys! I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on either the Yamaha HS5 or the Yorkville YSm-5. A comparison between the two would be ideal, if anyone has experience with both.

Seeking Practical Monitors for Mixing in a DIY Setting

Also, there's a lot of praise to be found for the affordability/quality of the Yorkville YSM-1. However, it is not made anymore. How do the YSM-5 or YSM-6 stack up to it? How does the YSM-5 compare with the YSM-6? Particularly considering I am only using my apartment, is the smaller one of...

Seeking Practical Monitors for Mixing in a DIY Setting

Hi friends. I am looking for a pair of monitors for mixing. I've done a fair bit of looking around online, and find myself confused by so much conflicting opinions and what not, as I can't afford anything aurally immaculate. I am entirely diy, record lo-fi on a 4 track cassette which I transfer...

Dum Dum Question about Clipping in Cubase

Thanks for your help Farview! I think I'm starting to understand that. Fortunately for me the preamps on the US-1800 are not very audible, if they are at all. Plus, I am using digital recording to overdub cassette 4 track, so the noise floor should be well above any advantages in optimal...

Dum Dum Question about Clipping in Cubase

If they are panned to the left or right, they peak higher than -3. I'm not sure what you mean by this(though I probably should). If things are okay on the digital side, can't the volume just be turned down? I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "analog side" in this instance. For mixing somehow?

Dum Dum Question about Clipping in Cubase

Hmm.. I'm not sure if it does have to do with zoom control, as I am quite familiar with the use of that. When I zoom in to the limit it becomes more evident when I am clipping, as I can see the waveforms hitting the roof and becoming unnatural. What confuses me is that the individual track...

Dum Dum Question about Clipping in Cubase

Okay thanks! But just to be clear, in reality so long as nothing touches 0, nothing is clipping right? So aim for -18 for safety reasons, but you really have until 0, right? Thank you for your help! Additional really, really stupid question: If I have 20 tracks let's say, and all are muted...

Dum Dum Question about Clipping in Cubase

Hey guys! Thanks for all your responses. I am mainly an analog guy but I use digital for some stuff. I don't mean to allow my signal to get near clipping. It happens in recording things with a lot of dynamic range, and because the little dials on the TASCAM US-1800 can be extremely sensitive(the...

Dum Dum Question about Clipping in Cubase

Hey! When using Cubase there are occasionally instances where the audio wave graphic slightly exceeds the given parameters. However, in playing back the wave never surpasses -3 db. The very fact that it seems to "stop" suddenly like this suggests that perhaps there is clipping, only I seldom...

The best way to transfer the analog signal from my 244 to my computer

4 discrete tracks. Thought about using some sort of mixing board for analog sound, but I do very little processing so I don't think it would make a difference, and I can take advantage of digital convenience. Doesn't sound like it will make any difference whatsoever whether 16 or 24 bit. But...

The best way to transfer the analog signal from my 244 to my computer

Does that mean there are no inherent advantages of 24 bit over 16 for what I am doing? Is anything lost sound quality wise? That's all I really care about. I can't imagine any audible hiss over the tape hiss. But I still want to do what's best for the sounds coming from the tape. I know I must...

The best way to transfer the analog signal from my 244 to my computer

Thanks so much for your time Farview. It is all a bit confusing ha. Would there be any reason to re-transfer the tracks using 24 bit? Or would any difference be negligible, and 24 bit would be a "cause you may as well" sorta thing? There's a few that I added a part or two in digital, so they...

The best way to transfer the analog signal from my 244 to my computer

When you say you do everything in 24 bit, you are talking about a non-cassette based format I assume? Hey Farview! I'm sure this all makes perfect sense to some one more on the ball than I, but I'm a little confused ha. In the first quote you said it doesn't affect processing, and in the...

The best way to transfer the analog signal from my 244 to my computer

Considering mixdown needs to be done at 16 bit for cd or vinyl, is there any reason to work in 24 bit if the aim is for such artifacts? Could it maybe have advantages even, in that the audio tracks aren't going through a further conversion process? Thank you for your patience! In my testing of...

The best way to transfer the analog signal from my 244 to my computer

Thanks again Farview. Really appreciate your generosity with your time in being of such continual assistance. "All processing in the daw will be done at 32 bit float, so it dosen't affect that." This means it won't affect mixdown once everything has already been transferred? "The only time it...
