Hello everyone and thanks in advance for all the responses!
I am a promising old talent from Finland and I´m having little problems with my DAW.
A little background first: I have been making music with Cakewalk for some years now (first PA8, now Sonar 2.0). Few months back I decided to get a...
Re: another idea?
Why the hell didn´t I think of that? Lessee... I have a least two free pre-fader auxes on the board. I can get a third one, if the piano can be monitored straight from the keyboard. Wow! Using them would of course make the recording slightly more complicated, but it sure does...
Hello again!
Here´s the deal: I play in an amateur big band. We are doing a little Christmas concert for our friends and relatives and I would like to record that show.
The easiest way would of course be a stereo recording with two room mics. However, the acoustics of the room leave a lot to...
I was wondering: they might not be of much use for a home recordist but just for the sake of it, what is the design principle behind shotgun microphones?
I don´t think Harveys big mic thread covered this one... I did a search, but didn´t find anything - well, except a rather amusing thread...
Did you know that Alan Hyatt is opening an European office in the UK?

I would wait for that before getting any SP gear...
Ja ja, I can hear you... at least somebody is importing that stuff so you may have a chance to try it out. Here, on the other side of the bay nobody has even heard about Studio Projects & co... "Home recording" seems to be an unknown concept in Finnish audio business. Thank god for Thomann...
Tack så mycket, Henrik!
Maybe I just should dig that marvellous thread up and read it through once again. Now if Alan could only get his European office up and running...
Haya!
First, let me state out that I do know the principles of M/S-setup (1 cardioid, 1 Fig of, split, phase etc.). My question is: how similar do the two mics have to be? I understand that a cardioid can never sound exactly same as a figure of 8, but would two similar multi-pattern mics be...
I agree with Aren. A good preamp can make a big difference, but you should first buy the mic(s) and try them out with the pres of your recorder. Preamps come in many flavors and you shouldn´t buy one before you know what you are looking for.
It´s like a scientific test: only change one...
Best bang for the buck? That´s easy:
Wire coat hanger and pantyhose AKA DIY pop shield. The price/sound improvement ratio is unbeatable.
Actually you could very well get those for less than a buck so maybe they don´t apply here...
Thank you very much for all the replies, especially chessrock; you have been very helpful. I´ll try them all if I can get hold of them (I haven´t been able to find the SM7 anywhere here) but at the time the MD421 seems to be the most interesting. It is considerably cheaper than the RE20 (at...
Haya there! Mic mania has struck me again and as you know, resistance is futile...
As it says in the subject, my mind is set on a large dynamic. There seems to be three major players in this field: Sennheiser MD421, Shure SM7 and E-V RE20. I don´t have any experience on these beasts (Actually I...
Hi everyone! This is indeed very interesting thread and I feel it is appropriate to send my first posting here...
I think one big difference between amteurs and pros is that pros know what they are doing. That may sound like a big "duh" but let me elaborate.
I most certainly am an amateur and...
