    Singing lesson for different genres...

i have never posted a recording on here, because they're old and shoddy (i still have a lot to learn, but have learned quite a bit since my last recording in early 2002), but a url with 10 mp3's that are just me and an acoustic guitar is http://207.14.235.4/zer0sig - i welcome any feedback...

Is a Person who Uses a Vocoder Considered a Singer!!??

can the person sing? if so, they are a singer. if not, they are a vocalist. if they can sing but don't on this track with the vocoder, they may be a singer, but they are vocalizing on this track.

Even the Rocks Would Cry Out

i will have to give this a listen when i'm on a faster connection. i don't listen to gospel very much, to be honest, but this is lyrically one of the strongest examples i've seen done remotely recently (dig the oxymoron).

Coming up with riffs on the guitar

writing good riffs easily is a matter of practicing writing riffs. monkey around until you hear something you like. in my experience, this is easier to do with open tunings-a majority of the cool riffs i've written in the last year have been in DADGAD-while they tend to make me bias my songs...

    Bad english?

most of the friends i've had from norway/sweden have not only adapted well to non-native languages, but they have a grasp on the semantics of the language that many native english speakers do not. usually, they sound rather formal verbally in english, in my experience, but that doesnt' hinder...

Help me find this song's key

it's D. i don't know the shmancy terms to explain "this is in D", but the fact that nearly every chord either shares many notes with d or d minor or are derived thereof (for example, f# is just a derivative of d sonically/perceptibly). f and c are very commonly used with d minor. everything in...

    consequences of low tuning?

i use a lot of tunings where the low e string is tuned down anywhere from a# to d#-i always use a rather heavy string there for that purpose. the others i don't worry so much about-it's the muddy/buzzy bass string that bugs me. then again, i don't tune the whole guitar down-i don't really see...

How to get that Stoner Rock Guitar Sound ??

from my listening experience, much of the stoner rock-type stuff i hear is probably played on neck pickups-less sharp articulation through the pickups-though queens of the stone age have some brightening on the top end. i would just tend to say on average-lots of bottom, average mids, average to...

So what D'yall think of this guitar???

the guitar that makes you happy is the one you should buy. as you get more experienced with acoustic playing, you will likely find that an ovation plastic guitar is simply not pleasing in non-live situations-the sound, responsiveness, feel, and overall quality of a nice, wood-built acoustic...

Happy Big Time Birthday, Harvey Gerst...

kramer, harvey is essentially the resident mic tech ninja-he knows quite a bit about the real nitty gritty as far as why one mic is different than another. read the above sticky thread about polar pattern and diaphragm size, and you too will believe. happy bday, harvey.

I need a new FTP Program

windows console ftp is kind of retarted, but functional. i use leapftp, typically, though i prefer using standard or ncftp when on a unix box. edited because i am indeed a twit.

    Singing lesson for different genres...

i believe the world record is something like 6 octaves, by a woman who was an opera singer, though i can't recall her name. i can get right at about 4 octaves on a good day-c2-c6, more or less (that's right, i think-c2 is two notes below the low e on a guitar, right?)-sometimes i flatten out...

    Most overpaid and underskilled guitarists....

i must input that while i consider slash not impressive at all technically (i could pick up just about anything he did pretty quickly, and i don't consider myself any better than somewhere in the average range for someone who enjoys playing guitar), he DOES have great articulation-all his notes...

    New, Cheap Isolation Tracking Headphones

harvey, i'll try to make sure to do some tracking while absolutely sloshed and destructive soon and see how they hold up. my guess is that they will hold up fine-they look like slightly evolved 70's phones to me, which bodes well for longevity.

Word for abuse, not use :)

i personally feel that the words "bird" and "beast" are overkill. is there any way you could allude to the ideas without using them so much outside of the chorus? i just think it's too much. the message is good. i'm not sure about the flow without hearing it to music.

    Hello.....

they definately look workable to me-it all hinges on the music, of course-they don't stick out to me in a poetic sense, but i like the metaphor and think the flow is pretty decent with good music behind it.

    Les Paul copy by Aria?

i'm with philboyd. i used to play with a guy who had an aria pro LP and it sounded/played damned well. don't know about the non-pro series, but i had a regular aria SG copy, and it played quite well. pickups weren't so hot (hot as in power, not tone-it actually sounded quite decent, just a...

Is having a good mic all you need?

absolutely, providing you have a great voice, a great preamp, great mixing/tracking equipment, great effects if you desire, great monitors, and a great ear. this only holds true, of course, if you've spent a great deal of time recording. if not, you're going to have to practice, practice, practice!

    New, Cheap Isolation Tracking Headphones

i should follow-up and mention that: 1. i got these headphones within 2 or 3 days (after ordering late at night) 2. they appear pretty tough 3. they actually sound pretty decent-not perfect, but more than acceptable for tracking. the pads sit a little oddly on my ears, but so did that style of...
