    Acoustic Guitar Care?

i like to take some mild steel wool to the fretboard of anything i buy, and lightly oil it with olive oil.

    Matched Pairs don't matter

that sounds almost like an attempt at a somewhat compact infrasound weapon, harvey..

Trying to decide on a new guitar amp... anyone hate Marshalls or have a better sugges

my input: marshalls are definately the best amp to get if you want a marshall. if you just want a good amp, i would look at them long after trying brands like soldano, rivera, mesa boogie, yadda yadda yadda (my point is that many amps offer many things marshall's don't-however, if you find that...

    Matched Pairs don't matter

i was actually referring to using spectrum analysis/etc to determine it rather than just my ear, but point taken.

Just bought my FIRST guitar! :-)

jedman, on most of the decent, not-often-used amps i've played with, that oxidation scratchy stuff exists, but it always settles down, and it can be cleaned if turning the knobs doesn't fix it. if you like the sound, KEEP IT!

    Anyone like flamed maple?

it's not really my style, but i think that that guitar is a good deal at 400 bucks.

    Anyone like flamed maple?

i don't like that look. it's like a huge amount of time and energy to produce something that just looks overproduced. the only way i'd go for a one-wood, one-finish guitar is if it were carved out of a single piece as part of the design. now that would be cool.

What is more important the mic or the pre?

i don't think it's really possible to give a good answer that isn't "both." slack on either, and anyone with good ears will know you're halfassing it. that said, my mics are better than my pres for the time being. not that my recordings sound spectacular. i haven't even posted in the clinic...

Just bought my FIRST guitar! :-)

jedman, scratchy noises when turning the knobs are caused by corrosion in the potentiometers. either turning them quite a bit or spraying contact cleaner in and doing the same wlil usually take care of that. 40 bucks for a 15-watt amp that sounds decent is a great deal. not that i know what that...

    Matched Pairs don't matter

it seems to me (and i am an amateur, so don't kill me for suggesting it) that it should be possible to check matching by close-miking a simple source out of phase and monitoring the output with the right equipment.

    SG vs. Les Paul

lp=stable and pretty tough, but unwieldy sg=light and quick on the neck, but flimsy in the end, i can't choose one. depends on what you want out of a guitar. hammer and saw, indeed.

    Matched Pairs don't matter

harvey is right on, as usual. how noticable these differences are depends on the material being recorded, the ears of the listener, the overall mix/style of the music, etc. i would tend to have some doubts about the "matchedness" of a pair of mics from a heaper manufacturer in particular. aside...

    A change of tempo?

nothing really jumping out at me, but it all makes sense. the music/vocal performance, in my opinion, is the difference between this being a dud and being great. btw, i'll try to consider this when i'm more sober and get back to you on the ending. i think the intent of the words is good, but...

    Recording a soprano

i run into this recording my own stuff-i'm a tenor, or perhaps even a high baritone, but when i crank the high notes, everything goes batty. it's really hard to control, but i don't want to censor myself for ease of recording-i just want to do it right. i'd love info as well.

    Guitar Tricks

speaking of tunings, my main acoustic is currently tuned to C. no, i mean EVERY string. C2C3C3C3C4C4 i think.

    sanding down frets

if you don't have hundreds of dollars worth of straightedges or know why someone would, you'd better not try to consider changing the shape of your neck for action purposes.

    Too much feedback w/POD Live

the only suggestions i have are to pay attention to position to speakers and to consider a parametric eq to chain in and cut a couple of the nasty frequencies.

    first scratch.

battle scars are cool, but it helps to have war stories from them. not "i let this drunk handle my guitar and he dropped it on the concrete"-the lord's prayer falling on it could make for a fine story!

    Why do Singer-songwriters go dry?

WATYF makes an important point-that songwriting is not always in the capable sentient hands of its vessel. i think my points basically relate to being able to RECEIVE the creativity he refers to, just to put in my 2 bits.

    Drum Mic Packs?

i don't consider 52's all that impressive for any application, though i haven't heard the betas. my suspicion is that they're just a little more 52 than 52-i'd have to see some real-world validation to sider them. have a link to info?
