    Tascam m-208 as pre-amp?

So after cringing about how cheap preamps are in our "magic boxes" we record into... It got me thinking: I have an old Tascam M-208 analog mixer (from my early attempts at recording in the 80's) in my closet doing nothing. Was thinking was it worth it to (when I buy a condenser mic) get a...

    Recording already amped guitar

In addition to Bane01's good advice, you could reconsider Amplitude: Apply it as a post effect along with comp and eq that you can monitor as you record in (so you can at least hear the result up front). You can then bounce the finished track to another track complete. You then disable the...

10x10 Storage Unit(Cement Floor, open ceiling, metal walls.)

When you say storage unit - one of those uninsulated all metal ones (garden shed type)? If so, that puppy will get hot and cold! Are you insulating it? I had a small room in I built in my garage years back. Had to add a window air unit and a space heater.

    Auralex Roominators Project 2 users?

Thanks for the info guys. I'm keeping diy just for the reason of proper bass traps. After looking at Alex and Ethan's websites, I have a much better idea of what will work. :)

Monitors: Front, Rear, or air suspension?

Sure a million variables but here goes... So I get my 11' x 12' room reasonably treated. But my mixing desk situation allows for monitors about 12" from the wall. I was looking at the Yamaha HS8 with the rear port setup. Should I look at front port due to proximity to the wall? Or sealed air...

    Auralex Roominators Project 2 users?

Saw this room treatment kit in the Sweetwater book. Was planning on a diy treatment of my 12' sq room but wondering how well the kit worked. It's listed at $659...

    Vocal Mic for Male Vocals

This thread is a classic topic. Being "The Home Recording Forum", most of us are at home trying to create music AND trying to record and mix said music... A daunting task. Maybe it's just me but when I here the Neuman name I think I'm in the wrong place. Yet on another forum a majority in the...

    Condenser Mic for under £60?

Reconsider using a USB interface. You can disable your onboard sound card so no conflicts. Also most interfaces have 2 inputs that double as xlr or 1/4 jack inputs. In addition, you'll have less latency with the USB interface.

    Audio Technica AT 2020

I'm kind of a newbie here as well. My own experience using an SM58 rather than a condenser mic is my vocals seem more flat. I'm not a pro (a hobbiest songwriter). My voice can be thin. Using a condenser my voice sounds more "full" for lack of a better word. Maybe a placebo stringless guitar...

Mic stand reflection filters... Usefull or gimick?

That's the one. Wasn't sure I could/should link to it.

Mic stand reflection filters... Usefull or gimick?

So I ran across the YouTube video on the how and why the sE unit is built. As you guys said, a lot more goes into it than I thought (of course I'm a nube on this so...). It would be cool if I could actually demo these along with different mics... So many options. That said my local GS Sam Ash do...

Mic stand reflection filters... Usefull or gimick?

The video was perfect! Not sure of the sound properties of the foam used (I'm still learning all this) but worth a try!

Mic stand reflection filters... Usefull or gimick?

That's pretty cool! Plus PVC is fun to work with. Keeping that one in mind.

Mic stand reflection filters... Usefull or gimick?

I guess then it comes down to how my room is ultimately treated to find out if it enhances the sound or makes it too dead. This will be my first condenser mic having only used sm58's. As such I'm thinking clarity will be increased along with picking up the room attributes as well. The simplicity...

Mic stand reflection filters... Usefull or gimick?

Been looking at condenser mics and see there are several offering "reflection filters". Those semi-circle foam absorbers that sit behind the mic (sE Electronics X1 Studio Bundle from Sweetwater is one example). I realize the vocal booth (using whatever means gets you there), is the best. That...

mix translation issues on smaller, suboptimal systems...why?

Ok, as you can see from the number of posts here... I'm quite the newb. But, to my ears I detect a bit of odd "afterglow" (reverb) on the piano especially with the right hand higher chords. On my cheap desktop speakers it almost sounds like a slight rotary effect. I put on my closed back...

    sog writing contests - Thoughts?

The ultimate absurdity of songwriting contests (and why no one cares about them anymore) was the infamous American Idol song contest of a few years ago. Most of the top 20 finalists previously were involved with work for Fox, Ford, or Clay Akin... Fail. Contests are great... if you know the...

    Behringer ECM8000 one trick pony?

Jon emailed me back (very helpful btw). His opinion is to just pickup the single measurement mic for room testing only. Then buy a better suited pair of condenser mics for acoustic guitar and vocals. He sited the noise as well. His choice was the Dayton EMM6 but the emc8000 would work as well...

Room layout ideas for mixing (No live except vocals, acoustic and direct the rest).

Alex, yes the bass traps in the corners and first reflections are a must. Wasn't sure about the monitor rear port and proximity to the front wall. Yes, close will work the best for me. Appreciate the help! Bill

    Behringer ECM8000 one trick pony?

Tom, that's hope. I'll ask around a bit for more info especially as using it for acoustic would be useful. PRHunt, I'll email them as well. Thanks! Bill
