Go with your original mic plan, and adjust from there using your ears. Use the 3:1 rule for spaced pair on the guitar mics, and check for phase issues. You may want to also try using just the N3 at the neck-body joint (rather than stereo).
To get the best isolation (lack of bleed) between...
I think I would look hard at putting the desk on the left wall in your sketch (narrow end of room) in Room A or B, with speakers firing down the long dimension.
Hmm... the 7506s are supposed to be quite good for $100.
In that price range, I like these:
Audio-Technica ATH-M50 - great sound, comfortable, straight cord option (yea!)
Sennheiser HD280 - flat response, comfortable
I have the Ultrasone 450 too and they sound about like the HD280 but not as...
If you only need 2 analog inputs, I would recommend the Emu 0404 USB interface ($200). Excellent AD-DA conversion, good preamps, easy to use. I use it with Reaper - works great.
I have used these three cable testers with success:
Ebtech Swizz Army 6-in-1 ($90-100) - the one Behringer "cloned"
Whirlwind DCT-9 ($80)
Velleman TTEST15 10-way ($50-80)
The best (most versatile, most intuitive, best value) is the Velleman, IMO.
The Ebtech is good for what it...
You can get the ATH-M50S (straight cord) for about $80 new on ebay. Then have $20 for the extension.
Very good sound with comfortable fit and decent isolation for bleed control.
I built and used one of those PVC frame V-shaped thingies - it is really a reflection filter, not a soundbooth. They do a good job of minimizing early reflections of high frequencies that plague small rooms. However, they do nothing for the low frequencies. I used mine for a year, but now I...
Audiofire 12 is popular and has no preamps - must use external preamps.
RME Fireface 400,800 are popular - they have bypassable preamps (using the TotalMix routing software that comes with them)
I have the Senn HD280s and the ATH-M50s. For a flat response for mixing, I prefer the HD280. The ATH-M50s sound gorgeous for listening, however, with more powerful bass response and sparkly highs, but I am not sure it is a flat response I am hearing. Both are very comfortable, more so that my...
I liked mic 1 best, but not by a large margin.
Mic 1 seemed more detailed and balanced across frequencies, where mic 2 seemed more mid-rangey.
Mic 2 did seem to pick up more "woodiness" of the guitar, and I liked that, but overall, mic 1 was best to my ears.
The NT-1a is an Australian-made, very good mic for the money (reg. $229, I have seen it as low as $180 new) that gets good reviews. It has the lowest self-noise of any mic on the market (5 db).
The only criticism I have read is that it can be a little harsh on some voices, especially when...
try deep bass traps in your bonus room
That room looks similar to my bonus room, where I record/mix.
I would highly recommend that you investigate deep bass traps at the front of the side walls (either side of the mix desk) -- i.e., bass traps to fill the space behind the knee wall under the...
Your equipment has to convert the analog mic signal into digital for the computer - so you either need a USB mic -OR- a regular mic and an audio interface. An audio interface has A/D and D/A conversion -- A/D for recording input from the mic to computer, and D/A for playback from your computer...
