If you had $5000 to spend, would it be on Behringer or Nady gear?

I'd travel to russia and poland with it. :D And save some to get to the jamfest next year. ;)

Thee Worst Signal Chain For Violin

The signal chain always starts with the player. Get a youngster that is just capable of fingering the notes in the right tempo. Make sure his intonation is not where it should be... That alone, in combination with his cheap violin will give you a good start.

I Wanna Play Those TV Chords.....

To fret the chord I noted, you have to put your index and middle finger on the G and B string, which is the 4th and 5th string, counting from the highest (the thick) E string. Thus the lower strings... Or do you mean lower strings as in sounding low?

I Wanna Play Those TV Chords.....

What you describe is the basic C-chord moved up the neck. So, if you'd take a D-chord with that voicing, you'd play (from the upper E string down to the lower E string so EADGBE) these frets: x 5 4 2 3 x Both E strings are damped in this position, you do this with placing the fingers nearest to...

How to get the most out of your soundcard ?

It WOULD be a good idea to put playback to 8bit, if your PC has 8bit busses. Sending 8 bits of data is just as much trouble as sending 16 bits... Also, using different soundcards would not matter, if the soundcard is full duplex, the playback will not influence the simultanuous...

Please ID these mics from live shows

I've used the 421 live, but mostly for bass, never for vocals. It would be kinda strange too seeing a singer jump around with a 421 in his hands. :D

    Getting all new mics

I've had VERY good results with the ECM8000 as overheads. If you use those, it's better to take scratchtracks of the guitars direct, and overdub them lateron. This way, you have no guitaramps bleeding in the ECM8000. They are omnis... As for the kickmic... If you're gonna record this guy alot...

Please ID these mics from live shows

I've done TONS of live gigs, and I don't think an SM57 sound nasal or muffled at all!? It sounds pretty ok. Depending on the speakers, amps, the preamps, .... ofcourse. AND the mixer. AND the singer. If the singers don't have a clue on how to use the mic, and cup their hands around he...

Should I buy an original SM57 or an immitation?

I can get them brand new for 80€... You just gotta know the places man... If I buy more than 10 I can get them somewhere around 70€...

    Ever Mix Drunk?

Somewhere around april this year, I had to mix 2 rock'nroll bands at our youthclub... The first one went ok, the second one played 2 sets, and I completely had it. Then some friends of mine started lighting up some fatties... So I asked them to pass it on. The first one gave me a nice buzz. Then...

    Another fine offering from Behringer

Very true!!! I've mixed live gigs on those... They are a disaster to work with. If you have all channels working, you'll get stuff like 2 mics on one guitarspeaker, sounding COMPLETELY different without even touching the EQ! I tell you, it was hell working with that. I dunno what the hell was...

    Micing saxophones

If played right, an alto will sound warmer and lusher than what most tenorplayers get out of their instruments. You CAN get a warm tone out of an alto. I know. I'm smart. (And also I have some friends that play my socks off. One of 'em graduated this year at brussels conservatory with...

ecm8000 too sensitive for live recording

I use the ECM8000 as overheads. But this means you cannot put anything else in the room but drums, or it will be on those tracks too. I've also done liverecordings with them, just used them as a stereopair in the room the concerts in, and capture the sound as it is in the room. No mixing...

I'm teaching a songwriting class - help me!

HARMONY!!!! Melody and harmony go hand in hand. The most silly melody can sound awesome with the right chords under it. Just a good melody or harmonization isn't enough. You need BOTH. And when at it, why not add rhythm to it. Rhythm might seem as an essential part of melody, but it is more...

    First big job

I'm doing my first "payed" job now... I told them I needed a kickmic to record them, so my price was about the money I need for a kickmic. Actually, a little less. (150€) They are just newbies, trying to get an idea of the recording... (The rhythmguitar player just started half a year ago!) But...

Getting Video into a computer on a VERY cheap budget.....

What format is it now? Are you using a digital cam? With those digital thingies you can use firewire. I think. As for other cheap solutions; I have no idea whatsoever. The cheapest solution is probably to play it on a video and capture it with a webcam. Results will most probably be very...

    Chart Of General Compressor Settings

I don't really think they make sense?? Every track, every instrument, and every compressor will sound different, how can you possibly reuse the settings then? You can compare them to get an idea of what you can do, try it, and see what it gives, but hell, don't just copy settings! Use yer ears!
