Then I guess to think that I picked up a clock for $300 that is equivalent or close to the quality of those other big name pieces of gear.
I haven't put it through its procedures yet, but I'm looking forward to it.
Before I dive into console land for good, I wouldn't mind just kinda trying it out. I know most mail order places have return policies which I could take advantage of. I don't mean with an 8 buss or anything, but with something smaller just to give me an idea of what will happen with the sound...
The reason I ask is because I'm thinking about diving into console land. It requires a good amount of investment up front with the console, enough converters to mixdown how many ever channels you need, and then outboard gear, but if mixing in analog changes the sound the way some people describe...
For those of you who record on some kind of digital medium, whether it be a DAW or stand alone digital record, who mixes down through an analog console and what kind of console, who mixes in the box, and who mixes in the box and sends it to some kind of tape for the 2-track.

I have no affiliation with this company what so ever, but I found a rental place that's selling a bunch of Lucid Genx-96 word clocks because they've upgraded to the Big Ben.
I got mine for $300. I thought I'd pass along the offer, I think they have 5 or 6.

I personally don't have a pre like that, but you'll hear a lot of people talk about the Great River and it's ability to give a rich creamy sound when the input is driven hard and the output gain is back off. On the other hand, when the input is backed off and the output is providing more gain...
People buy externer a/d converters mainly for their quality. I have no experience with the hd24, but i'm sure there's a step up as there are some that cost a couple thousand dollars a channel. Depending on the converter, you can choose several bit rates and sample rates to go into your recorder...
I was reading up on the figure 8 pattern some more and came across some info on the royer R-121 ribbon. The page talks about using the back side for things like acoustic because it's a little brighter, but they say when using the backside, flip the phase even if there's no source on the other...
good link thanks...so the polarity is reversed on the back lobe of a figure 8 mic. If you change the polarity of a single sound source does it change the sound?
Brandon
Is the back lobe of a figure 8 mic out of phase?
So if it is, how would that be usefull if you're recording two vocalists (one on each side of the figure 8)? The singer singing into the back side would have their track out of phase right?
How does the out of phase track sound different...
This is a mindprint envoice channel strip with mic pre, eq, and tube compressor. It have owned it for a little over a year and have had great results with it. It's been in the rack the whole time.
Here is the technical info from their website: http://www.mindprint.com/english/proden.htm

Less than a year old 4 channel Sytek mic pre with the Burr Brown's on channels 3 and 4.
It has been in the rack the entire time I've owned it. Extremely clean channels 1 and 2 provide great results on drums and acoustic instruments and Burr Brown transformers on 3 and 4 to give that smooth iron...
Michael,
I know this probably won't sound as convincing as the other resposes, but I just graduated with an engineering degree from Virginia Tech and through all the mechanical design classes, much emphasis was placed on numeric testing and data collection. The nyquist frequency was half the...
I find the eq really helpful sometimes. Whenever I record drums, I listen to the click and Nuendo puts out this awful beep sound. To get it loud enough to hear over the drums, it's ear piercing. I find that cutting the hi's on the headphone amp make it a little easier to deal with. Same goes...
Nathan-Thanks for all your help and the email links. The Benchmark DAC-1 seemed to make quite an impact once people got their hands on it. Hopefully their ADC will to the same. I'm not very familiar with the Mytek products aside from the fact that they're mostly used in a serious recording...
I heard about the Benchmark.
I'm ready for all of them to come out and then we can get down to business. I suppose I'll wait until those converters come out and then make my decision, as I'm doing anything important in the next few months.
Is it fair to say that both the Benchmark and Mytek...
