If you can't afford a U87 what's the next best thing???

After my friend turned me on to the Solaris I went and bought two.... and also the Sputnik and a matched pair of Pulsar 11s... can't believe what you get for the price. Great stuff..... it's a shame they're winding down production. Here's an interesting piece that mentions some of these...

If you can't afford a U87 what's the next best thing???

Today I came across this thread that I started way back in 2007 and I would like to add a footnote. Yes Hi Folks it's me again.... the OP with the tea fetish who wanted to know what the cheapest way to get a U87 was.... other than theft. I recently have become a friend and collaborator with a...

AKG C-525s.... Anyone know this mic and its specs ???

Just picked one up on eBay because I thought it might be comparable to the 535eb. It'll take a few days to get here so I thought I'd ask around. I'm guessing it's the predecessor to the 535EB.... but it runs on AA battery as well as phantom. All I know is that it's from the late eighties. Are...

    Audio Technica AT2035

The 2035 is a very good bang for the buck mic.... fairly smooth and quite neutral with a characteristic AT sound. It all depends what you're using it for...... but all round it is a better mic than the 3035 and the 2020 IMO.

Looking for a cheap solution to mic upright bass for recording, not for amplification

A pro engineer friend of mine borrowed my little Audio Technica Pro37R from me last week to record a jazz quartet. He had read that the legendary Steve Albini likes them for upright bass. He wrapped it in a bit of foam and tucked it in the bridge pointing upwards. He played me the result later...

    EV RE-200 (condenser)

RE200 as a vocal mic I know it's an old thread but.... Just got an Re200 based on the SOS review (see below) .... cost me $100 on ebay and came from Fargo, ND (a place which has probably never recovered from a visit by the Coen Brothers). I also bought a crosshair pencil mic shockmount with...

    Fifty dollar mics

I think the Re50 was the ENG Omni with the small basket wasn't it? This is probably a PL80 from what I can figure out so far. I heard the new PL80 was fairly different from the original but I also would like to hear from someone who's had the opportuinty to compare them. Here's a link to a...

    Fifty dollar mics

Here's what I think is maybe an original PL80 that's been painted black.... can't say for sure. They maybe had a couple of similar shaped ones ....??? Larry you know more about these mics.... was there another EV shaped like the PL80? I think the PL95 was a rehash of the DS35 wasn't it ...

Nice track Larry.... I think the MB will work well on your voice....On some voices I think they almost have a condenser kind of detail..... like some of the AKG dynamics also achieve. Let us know what you think about the ATR30 It's a ridiculous bargain and every bit as good as a 58 etc. and...

    Alesis AM2 and CAD CM217

They seem to have different freq range with the Alesis going up to 18,000. That said, I guess they're out of the same chinese factory with each player putting their own brand on them. Joe Meek have a similar pair that seem to pop up with other brands on them. I think Alesis used to do a deal...

    Fifty dollar mics

Hi Larry Thanks for your positive feedback on the song. I saw an MB3000L for about $60 new on ebay a while back so I guess there's some NOS out there still. Did you ever get round to getting an ATR30 for $18 yet???

    Fifty dollar mics

At the moment I'm assuming the MB3000L was a bit of a One-Off event.... but it's hard to imagine such a tasty mic as this not existing with another model number, somewhere else in the vast array of the AT line up.

    Fifty dollar mics

The MB300L has very different specs to the 1kc and cost a fair bit more when new. It was the top of the line dynamic in that earlier series and none of the newer K series seem to refer to the specs of the earlier MB line. If there's anyone out there from AT that knows which current AT dynamic...
