You mentioned interning... usually it would make sense to intern for a few years (at least) after you graduate before you fly solo and invest the money. That way you will have more industry contacts and a better feel for the gear needs and your local market etc...

Try a 1/8 inch stereo to RCA cable from your laptop headphone/line out to the speakers. - I am assuming your studio monitors have RCA jacks and I am assuming they are self powered. Or better yet, post what kind of controller and monitor speakers you have.

Hmm... I have read that is exactly the reason that "Wave Out" (current playback) was removed from the available list of recording sources. You can download Realtek drivers that will fix some motherboards that use their chip- but yes it is a problem.
There is a thread on these forums where someone built a mostly soundproof recording box for micing an amp in an apartment. I'll see if I can locate it.

Sometimes I take an unfinished project and just export it to an mp3 or wave file and "normalize" the audio upon exporting which brings up the volume all at once adjusting for peaks - just so I can listen to it temporarily. This adds about 30db to the exported file!
Don't forget that your room may have really bad noise reflections and need some acoustic treatment as well if it is very noticeable. It also depends on how professional of a sound you are aiming for.

My keyboard has middle C listed as C3 (written below the key) It is a 76 key keyboard. Do other keyboards with different numbers of keys use a different terminology (like D4) if they have 88 keys?
You don't really need the mixer, Audio Interfaces are available with 8 channels in and 8 channels out. There will be a software mixer available with whatever DAW (recording software you use). Read up on the sticky posts in the forums here... especially the ones about audio interfaces and home...
