Musically, what continues verse into chorus

I think "all of the above" can apply, depending on the song. I always try to make my choruses distinct from the verses and bridges, just so they stand out and get your attention. Sometimes it's subtle, sometimes more pronounced, but I always try to do something. Usually I will change the...

    how to compose songs?

I listened to it as well. It was "interesting", in the way that Broadway show tunes are "interesting". I truly believe Toddskins and Mr. Honesty are the same person, judging by their writing style in their posts. That would make Mr. Honesty not very honest, now wouldn't it?

Do I need to tweak this lyric?

Thanks for the comments, Ed. Not too critical at all. The song is on my Soundclick page if you'd like to hear it, the link is in my signature. -Mike

    easy to write a song

You are an amazing talent, Walter. But I think you are stealing/absorbing all of the cosmic forces which allow people to write songs....because of you, a hundred others sit looking out the window, pen in hand :) Keep it up, brother.

    Tunesmith by Jimmy Webb

Just bought the book Tunesmith: Inside The Art of Songwriting. I love his writing, in fact one of my favorite albums of all time is Watermark by Art Garfunkel....every gorgeous song written by Jimmy Webb. Tunesmith is 432 pages on every facet of what we all do. I can't wait to get into this...

    What is talent?

Total thread hijack here: Ray, I have briefly met Elvis Costello and his wife a couple of times. He is gracious, soft-spoken and a 'nice guy'. To stand backstage and hear him do "Alison" with just him and an acoustic guitar was a great moment in my life. Of course 15 minutes later I escorted...

My newest song "King Of Pop"

In another thread I posted some lyrics I wrote about Michael Jackson's life. I eventually wrote some music for it, recorded it, and now it's posted on Soundclick. I used a bass line and guitar riff inspired by "Billie Jean", but a totally different melody. Hope you like it! KING OF POP...

    What is talent?

My wife took 8 years of Royal Conservatory piano training. While she plays, I have heard numerous people say "I wish I was that talented" or some such thing. But - If you pull away the sheet music while she is playing, she has to stop, because she has no idea what to play next. She cannot...

New lyrics: "The King Of Pop"

Well I finally got this thing recorded...but I'm going on vacation tomorrow, I'll post it when I'm back. I managed to get the Billie Jean drumbeat and bass line into it!

Fleeting song ideas you hear - how to turn them into a song?

I have written more than one set of lyrics in the stairwells where I work! I whip out the pen & paper and get the idea written down before it's gone. As stated above, the cellphone is my best friend...all the phones made in the last 3-4 years have this function.

How to write songs, when you have absolutely nothing to write about?

Maybe I can paraphrase what Ray said. The title of this thread is exactly: How to write songs, when you have absolutely nothing to write about? This does NOT mean "I have a ton of lyrics but I can't seem to write a melody to complement them". This means "I can't write any lyrics right now"...

New lyrics: "The King Of Pop"

Thanks Frankie. I envision it with more of a funk/R&B vibe to it. In fact, I'd like to use the bass line from "Billie Jean" on parts of the verse. But thanks for your suggestion! -Mike

New lyrics: "The King Of Pop"

Still a bit of a rough draft, will likely tweak it somewhat. Michael Jackson's music was part of the soundtrack of many of our lives...this is my tip of the hat to him. KING OF POP Copyright 2009 by Mike Pilling V1 Gary Indiana Almost 50 years ago Steel was king , the only thing A fella...

My new song "I Want To Be Here"

Also posted in the Songwriters forum. I won't give much of a preamble on this one, since some say that ruins the song for them This is quite a departure from my last song "The Blue Horizon" (which was covered beautifully by Gecko Zzed). I raunched it up a little, making it into a bit of a...

My newest song: "I Want To Be Here"

Well, I won't give much of a preamble on this one, since some say that ruins the song for them :) This is quite a departure from my last song "The Blue Horizon" (which was covered beautifully by Gecko Zzed). I raunched it up a little, making it into a bit of a blues rocker, along the lines of...

Do I need to tweak this lyric?

GZ, as always, you present a great observation of the goings-on of the thread. What strikes me about the discussion so far is the fact that my lyrics have been taken a bunch of different ways. That's cool. The chorus is definitely not meant to be patronizing - it is as GZ says, a jab at those...
