Where are the Oct/Nov challenge songs??

Come on guys...we had some really great lyrics submitted, it would be a shame if they didn't see the light of day in a song! Only 5 days left in November.......;) -Mike

Your Winter Eyes ~ Geck's music to Joseph's lyrics

Another winner for my iPod. Fantastic job, Geck. I can't express how much I love your voice (or your "usual croak" as you put it). It fits this song perfectly. Excellent work on the melody - I'm a huge fan of maj7 chords. I found the arrangement to be very Alan Parsons-ish. Which I love...

    Oct/Nov Challenge ~ Strat1958's finished (?) product

Well, as I said in a previous post - my job is absolute mayhem for the next few months. But I finally managed to get my little tune put together! As I also said before, this is the most depressing set of lyrics I've written. So as not to make the whole listening experience pure drudgery, I...

Alright so I have the lyrics.. I have the acoustic

Go to JamStudio.com and try that out. Half of my songs use JS as the backing tracks, which I embellish with more guitar, piano etc. Mike

    Oct-Nov Challenge ~ Geck's recording effort

Quote: "...it aint gonna get any better, so hre it is" Wow, I don't think it could get any better, Geck. You use such imagination in how you put your songs together. I love...LOVE....the guitar solo near the end. The way it dramatically changes key, but then brings everything back to the...

    Mixing: Speakers or Headphones

By necessity, I mix with headphones (Sennheisers). And I almost always end up with too much bottom end for the car. The speakers rattle the windows, and NOT in a good way. It's hard to convince myself to back off on low EQ when mixing, because it sounds so damn good on the phones! So, I am...

    October/November challenge

Thanks Dave - it is fun painting this picture! Got two acoustic guitar rhythm tracks done yesterday, for a full, dark guitar sound. I played the same part twice, with 2 different mics, panned left-ish and right-ish. The guitar (Martin Sigma DM-5 with new Elixir strings) has been tuned down a...

    October/November challenge

I've written a melody. I've been singing the song a cappella in the car, driving to & from work. Hopefully will push the red button on the weekend! -Mike

    October/November challenge

Well I assembled the drum track today, and when I was pretty far along, my computer locked up, so I lost everything since the last save. SHIT! I had to do half of it again! But, the wheels are rolling! -Mike

    October - November challenge ~ Geck's critiques

Geck, as usual, you have spent a lot of time considering what we have offered up for critique. Thank you for such honest comments. They really do help, at least in my case. -Mike

Which comes first, the music or the lyrics?

For me, it's the Elton John method, 100% of the time, except I don't have a Bernie Taupin writing my lyrics! I write a set of lyrics, tweak them around so the rhyming and meter seem to work, then write a melody to those lyrics. I can't do it the other way around, I've tried. -Mike

October / November challenge - Joseph's critiques of the participants

Your observations are bang on, Joseph...I have come up with a melody and chord structure, and it will indeed be a slow acoustic treatment. I want to make it simple and intimate, along the lines of Nick Drake or Beck Hansen. I will start the recording process over the next few days. Thanks so...

    October / November Challenge

Hah, you'll get corrected alright! :-) What you describe is a "pre-chorus". A bridge and a middle eight are the same thing. Middle eight is a UK term and bridge is US. -Mike

    October/November challenge

OK so I think I have some recordable lyrics. Now just have to come up with a melody! GONE © 2009 Mike Pilling Empty house, empty streets Same old same old, just repeats Empty feeling in my soul You had gone Empty nights, empty days Stumbling through it, in a haze It was out, of my control...
