I'm wondering if anyone rates SE Electronics SE3 or SE4... The link above at the store in Edinburgh sells either of them for £129 each...
Any opinion on SE4400a? I recently bought a matched pair for £500 at clearance sale - 50% off the RRP! For that price, I couldn't say no...

Plenty of SE Electronics mics on clearance here it seems...
I'd +1 on Rode NT-5 pair - or better, go for Rode NT-55 matched pair set.
I have Rode NT-55 matched pair (with both cardioid and omni heads), and am learning to record the Steinway model D before my next recital soon - for the size of the mics and price, I'd say the piano sounds remarkably...
I tested my Rode NT-55 pair with omni heads on a cheap 17-cm stereo bar recording a Steinway model D at Jacques Samuels yesterday (ok, in a small cramped room) - for the price, it is amazing how faithful the sound is all the way down to the bottom A...
I don't think I got the preamp setting...
Thanks John and all - I'll give it a go using my Røde NT-55 pair with omni and record the recital via Focusrite Octopre MkII on my H4n at 96kHz/24-bit. Less to carry too!
One of these days I'll save enough for the pair of Sennheiser MKH omnis and upgrade to something like Korg MR-2000s for SACD...
Thanks all for the valuable suggestiuons here.
To moresound - John previously mentioned that the switchable pattern mic set to omni may not be as good as a pure pressure omni mic. Judging from the sound samples in SOS article using NT-55s - the mics are very good when set up appropriately...
Hi folks,
I want to record a 9-foot Steinway grand in a large room with good acoustic.
I have:
1) Matched pair of SE Electronics SE4400a
2) Matched pair of Rode NT55
3) Matched pair of AKG C214
4) Non-matched pair of AKG Perception 420
5) Non-matched pair of Shure PG81
Recorder: Zoom R24...
Hmm - just returned from a music store nearby, only to be told that I would be better off using a pair of SE4400a PLUS either spend as much as you can on the preamps or get an audio interface i.e. Roland Octa Capture.... I tried to ask questions regarding AKG C414, or any other multi-pattern...
Wow - very high set-up. I need a height extension to my mic stand as well as extra-long XLR cables. I see a pair of SDC mics shown in this photo - so this suggests that it might be better for me to look at using getting a pair of NT55s using the omni caps (as suggestions elsewhere seem to...
Mics can be easily placed 8-10 feet from the grand piano and angled towards the fully-open lid.
I guess my matched C214 pair can be used for this arrangement - how far apart between the mics should be? 8-10 feet apart also?
I also read somewhere that Omnis are often preferred for classical...
Hi all,
New here, and wondering if you can help.
I'm doing a piano recital next month and wondering what's the best way to record a grand piano in a small recital room (120+ capacity).
Piano: Steinway Model-D grand, 9-ft
Venue: Small recital room (120+ capacity), high ceiling with a dome roof...
