Piece of gear or equipment can't live without

Oh no Glen, have you never used Gaff tape?

    Silly cubase question

Isn't Cubase LE the version that comes free with many different soundcards and such? If so, thats why it is so limited. Just a limited demo basically to get you familiar with the Cubase environment. Moving to Cubase studio 4 would be leaps and bounds better than LE in that case. For most...

    Cubase to Nuendo

What Farview recommended sounds like the right solution. If you are seeing your meters working on your master output in Nuendo, check to make sure that Nuendo is trying to address the same (or at least proper) soundcard channels.

Which 16 channel mixer with high end preamps?

Actually, yes. I have both seen and used Mackie 8 buss consoles MANY more times then I would like to have, and I stand by my statements. In fact, we have even owned some. Thankfully those are almost all gone now. What good are having 8 busses if they slur the sound and are also victim to...

    Seck mixers?

That looks just like the Seck mixer I described earlier in this thread, but a shorter channel count. If it is, then there are tape returns on each channel that route to the mix B output. LImited control, but tape returns none the less.

Daking Mic Pre IV - worth the $$$ ?

As hard as it is to do, I have never regretted saving up a little longer and getting the "right" tool for the job instead of settling for an "intermediate" purchase. The Syteks are good preamps, but in your specific scenario it does sound like they may not be the right purchase for you at this...

    Essential studio rack equipment?

No offense, but most of this seems completely backwards to me. First, how is the Mackie unnecessary just because of a computer? Second, I would not be buying compressors, limiters or effects for an outboard rack unless good quality stuff was being purchased. By good quality stuff, I do...

    Recording A Cover Band

From what I understood, you are partly liable for recording a cover. Like Daisy mentioned, in reality nothing will probably happen unless certain conditions were met, but that is no guarantee. I would imagine that if the cover you recorded was at all obscure then pleading ignorance to that...

Daking Mic Pre IV - worth the $$$ ?

As much as I do like the Sytek preamps, I am not sure I would consider them to be a huge step up form the Mackie Onyx preamps. The older Mackie preamps I would, but the Onyx is definately nicer than the VLZ crap. In fact, the Onyx almost has a Sytek'ish vibe. That kind of neutral but still a...

Which 16 channel mixer with high end preamps?

Thats because the Mackie 8 buss stuff has many known issues including longevity, poor sounding Preamps, even worse EQ, crosstalk etc....

Daking Mic Pre IV - worth the $$$ ?

The Sytek preamps are nice solid sounding preamps. They are great for their price range. Personally, they are somewhat similar to your RNP sound. Fairly neutral, good headroom, good build. They won't be one of those "wow you" preamps, but are an excellent utility kind of preamp where they...

    Can cubase do this?

Are we talking about using lanes here? It sounds to me like what the poster is after. If this is the case, visually speaking the colored track on bottom is the primary track. Any gaps in that track are replaced with the next higher (most recent) track until the bottom track kicks in again.

Daking Mic Pre IV - worth the $$$ ?

There are still a few places offering deals where if you buy 4 modules you get the lunchbox for free. At least one place that I recently saw was letting you buy ANY four modules and not just modules of the same type or brand. If you factor this into the equation, a rack mounted API 3124x is...

    Why use a tube mic?

The only reason to buy a tube mic in my opinion should be because you like the way the mic sounds. If you try not to think of a tube mic as a mic with some osrt of additional feature things make more sense. The of the mic as a whole unit. Something that either sounds good or doesn't. If it...

Shure KSM137 pair or AKG C1000S

Pohaku has some good suggestions here. Persoanlly, I too would avoid the AKG C1000's. The KSM Series of Shure mics are pretty nice. I definately prefer them (for most recordings) to the sm81's. The josepphsons and Beyer's are also nice mics. In my opinion they are a nice little step up from...

    Shure PG81 condenser for vocals?

Can you do it? Certainly. Should you? Maybe. If I were in your shoes and was using an sm57 then i would certainly give it a try. Personally, I am not a big fan of the PG81's, but that is what you already have so if you are not going to go get a different mic, for that matter, even if you...

Daking Mic Pre IV - worth the $$$ ?

$2000 is really close to getting you 4 x 500 series channels and a lunchbox, leaving some room for expansion. This also allows you to get a mixture of channels. Have you considered that?

Can't find a 13" 5 lug tom ring! Any help?

I do not have the number handy, but try and get a phone number for the Chicago Store in Tucson Arizona. They have a huge attic filled with old drum stuff that they have completely dismantled and put into sections. When I was up there a few months ago they must have had at least 500 drum shells...

    Connecting a Mackie SDR 24/96 to a PC ??

My experience was that anything more than maybe 5 or 6 tracks and realtime was faster. I seem to remember a couple of projects that were maybe an hour long and 24 tracks in 24 bit that took like 4 hours or more to transfer.

    bass with tons of sustain?

Tadpui, you should have a look at the link that I posted. The bridge in that link probably has less mass than many but uses a whole different (at least I have never seen anything like it) overall design to acheive better sustain.
