Nah, I'd make do with the AKG mic through the Mackie pres, for the time being, until you get happy with your overall mix - you're probably not happy with your mix because those monitors are tiny, tiny things, and Events aren't known for their bottom end (more like, for the lack of it). You...
You know it! Probably a good idea for a new thread, too, "gear that will become classic" - I mean, people dog the mini pre and the tube mp and the little bellari knockoff thing, saying that they sound "funky" or whatever in comparison to REAL preamps... Hey, I'm sure that's the same kinda thing...
I also use a 118, which I picked up for, like, thirty bucks or something ridiculous. I've got a 118, 2 163x's and a 163a - all together, that set me back maybe $165.
And, of course, they're usually the first things I reach for. I LOVE the old DBX stuff... The 118 is a ridiculous steal, even...
Good enough!
I have a pair of 163x's that sound similar, but the 163a definitely has a different character. Not bad, just different...
Thanks for the info!
I'm sure this is really boring, and Tom is tired of questions about discontinued gear, but... I can't seem to find a definitive answer on this.
I love the 163x, I have several, and on a whim I picked up a 163a. Am I crazy, to think that they sound different? What's really the difference between...
Oh, sure, don't get me wrong, I wouldn't make a habit of using a LD without a shock mount, but... There's no way a mic should be this sensitive to noise from the shell. I actually have two of the 319's, and they're both like this.
It makes me much less confident in the mic, is all - I don't...
Hey, what DOES that MLA7 sound like, anyway? Just curious - saw one on ebay for cheap and was tempted to pick it up, even though I just bought a digimax...
ATM25 is FANTASTIC on kick, and usually low toms - not really the thing for high toms, though, in my opinion. I think the majority of people will agree that the ATM25 is a winner.
And, oh yeah, I like ATM25 on bass guitar cabs, too!
I'm really looking forward to hearing your results! My two cents, for what it's worth: I just picked up the Oktava 319, couldn't pass up the price... I've gotta say I'm not thrilled with it. For one thing, I'm shocked by the amount of "handling noise" - NOT that you would ever use this as a...
Yeah, and even though I'm not a Behringer fan I thought they were pretty decent. I didn't get to a/b it to the old Behringer or a Mackie (both of which I've owned), but the noise floor seemed low and it had plenty of gain (which is NOT how I remember my last Behringer mixer). Sounded far better...
In a word, crummy. I've had the tsm11's, and while the shock mounting was nice for drums, the sound quality really wasn't there. I'm much happier just sticking sm57's everywhere...
Although, the CADs were my first drum mike kit, and they WERE convenient, and they WERE decent (but not great)...
I don't actually have one, but I nearly bought one and am very familiar with it - and, yes, you're correct on all counts. Each channel has a direct out 1/4" plug, which are switchable pre/post fader PLUS a channel insert (as opposed to the small mackie and behringer mixers, which only have the...
I found this http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/231/caitlyn.html through the Vf16 site, and it completely blew me away! I'd like to know what preamps, mics, and outboard gear they were using, but they say this was all done with the vf16/vf-160.
For me, it's strictly for portability - e.g., track drums with it in a decent room, bring the tracks home to my computer system to overdub everything else. Yes, I would absolutely think that a computer recording setup would be far more powerful, and easier to use - but these units are pretty...
I've got a small box full of 57's, and I don't think I've paid more than $50 for any of them. I always find them cheap at the Music Go Round chain, especially if you search their website for store inventory across the country. Most individual stores will be happy to sell them mail order - see if...
Check it out, American Musical Supply has open-boxed, NO CD versions of the VF160 for $649! http://www.americanmusical.com/item.asp?UID=2003010315040763&item=NFS+FOSVF160X - I bought one last night. Of course, I'd love to have the cd, as exporting wav files to zip drive or whatever is going to...
