    Why?

Don't forget: Not all of us are doing rock music. There are other kinds of music in which the quality of one's signal chain can be very noticeable, because there is less music/noise masking it. I doubt that you'd put an SM57 on Yo Yo Ma's cello or Placido Domingo's voice.

    Ribbon mic values

Kenny, the only cheapie ribbon mic I've owned is the Oktava ML-52. But, if you look at historical RCA and Shure models, the difference between the 44 and the 74B, or the difference between the Shure 300 and the 315, that you notice in the specifications is that the more expensive models have...

Hey! Need a fast answer here, so if ya know, type it!

Far more important than the wiring of the house is the quality of power supplied by the electrical utility. The house wiring is not going to harm your amplifier, but you may want to ground the amp to a cold-water pipe so that it doesn't harm YOU.

Ribbon Mic ... Which One Then??!

This will get you a new Beyerdynamic M130. Alternatively, you might look out for a used Coles 4038, Royer R-121, Shure 300, or AEA R84. You might try the Oktava ML-52 with the mods (oktavamod?). The ML-52, stock, was my first ribbon. I didn't think much of it, but people I trust say that...

Ribbon Mic ... Which One Then??!

If the RCA 44 is your idea of what you want from the ribbon experience, here are my observations. For what it's worth, I have quite a few ribbon mics, including the AEA R44 and R84, Shure SM33/333, Shure 300, and Beyerdynamic M160/260/500. Part of what makes the 44 such an amazing mic is its...

Suggestions on a one mic setup

I've been into bluegrass for 32 years and I've never seen a bluegrass band using just one microphone. Even at Bill Monroe's Beanblossom Festival in 1975, every band used multiple microphones. Obviously, if you have singing and are in a large room or outside, you'll need more than one mic...

Singer who eats marbles... while singing...

You say you need for him to be more distinctive in the mix. Nobody's talked about EQing the OTHER elements in the mix, but IMO that's where you need to focus. Carve out a sonic space for his voice by using subtractive EQ on instrument and any other vocal tracks.

History of Rock and Roll on VH1 Classic

Mr. Berry has never been a great guitar player technically, but he gave a lot of thought to his soloes and many of them were just...brilliant. I remember reading an interview with him circa 1967 in which he was asked how he constructed his soloes, and his answer was "It's all math." My musical...

History of Rock and Roll on VH1 Classic

cephus, you HAVE heard "Live at the Regal", haven't you? If not, try it out. And I really love his early stuff on Kent and Modern. I have trouble liking what he's recorded since around 1967. I've seen him live twice, in the early 1970s. Great band, great show. But yeah, by taking steps to...

    ribbons

I have several M500s among my ribbon-mic collection. When you say "sensitive," do you mean "fragile?" The M500 is more sensitive than most ribbon mics but less fragile. It was designed as a LIVE vocal mic, so it is not a blushing violet which needs pampering. It has plenty of blast...

What do you think of the SP C1

I've had mine for several years. It's very nice on voices which can use some sizzle. I wouldn't use it for a female or bright male voice.

That amp sounds very nice, but 2 8" speakers are not going to be enough for a rock band.

    Service Pack 2

USB 2.0 is native to Windows 2000 SP4 and Windows XP SP 1. The only USB-related change in XP SP2 is an additional registry key which allows you to treat USB block-storage devices as readonly. I too built a DAW on XP SP1 and have never updated. All my other computers are kept updated. As...
