    ART DMPA Pro or Avalon??

the first pre i ever purchased was the dbx 376 tube channel strip, told in digital mode it sounded better than an Avalon 737 tube strip....(first mistake) soon after that purchase I bought an ART pro MPA two channel tube pre, told it was as good as a Universal Audio 610 "due to the arts tubes"...

    "Big" sounding preamps under 1k?

Christopher, I know what you mean about that "fat" in your face sound. my GR ME-1NV gives me that but single channel was 1k, the Speck 5.0 gave me that but single channel $800ish. the Chandler is super, but its $1700.00, this is also the catagory the $475.00 RNP miracle (I own as well) isnt...

    Cad Kbm412

i use the KBM412 as a floor tom mic. its very effective there as I purchased it for that purpose only. (it allows my 14" floor tom to sound like a big 16/18") for fun (I guess!) I compared it with my audix D6 on my 22" birch kick, just to see how the thing even sounded on a kick drum. it really...

    A good compressor

depends of course on what you need it for!.....I dont usually like to compress going in (I'll use plugs later as needed) I like keeping my options open and restrain from squashing things. for me I use a simple FMR RNC in the "Super Nice" mode which is very transparent and just takes the top off...

    A step up from the dmp3 ?

i wouldnt say that any of those pre's you listed are a "significant" step up from the dmp3! arguably some small differences with some (mainly the RNP) but you wont be doing back flips over those differences.

    mackie 1202 or something else

try the new Yammi boards mg series (mg12/4 ...$199.00). much better pre section than any of the Mackie series and very affordable. even if its just for a while! (could always use a board down the road for something)

need more line ins for my digi 002 rack

well here's one possible option. try looking into this new piece by M-Audio, its 8 mic pre or line level inputs, it will hook right into your 002 via adat lightpipe (giving you 8 more line/xlr, plus the 8 you already have with the 002) with something like this, I would run all my drums through...

need more line ins for my digi 002 rack

you have 8 line level ins on the 002 if you choose not to use the 4 mic pre's. (you'll have only 4 line level ins if you are using the 4 pre's at the same time)..obviously you already know this. what are you trying to do with your set up? it might help if you describe it.

DBX 576 vs. Great River ME-1NV

to expand on what Teacher is saying if I may: my GR ME1NV is my best pre, I wont say its a "Night and Day Difference" over my other pre's (people love to use that term to justify their purchases) I see things a bit different. individualy, a piece of quality gear yeilds smaller improvments in...

    overheads, hi hat mics

facing the same problem you did with the hats only, (I use mc012's as overs) and went with a third mc012 through an extra channel in a DMP3 with very nice results....i can understand needing a bit more panning from the hats, but I've never had a problem with the ride/bell coming through panned...

    Sm57's with Toms

Re: Re: submix the drums? in a great sounding room I would agree. however, IMO for those of us with small low ceiling (extra bedroom) type rooms, close mic'ng toms, snare bottom, hats, and even a mono room mic (to manipulate distance) gives you many options to help make up for a bad room...I...

Presonus Eureka For Vocals and Guitar

Respectfully: not saying the eureka is bad or good I have no clue yet, but do we ever hear a negative review in these mags?..."seemingly" somebody is always in someones pocket!

    Sm57's with Toms

Justin, my kit is a DW Birch 10" 12" 14"floor all traditional depths w/coated Ambassador heads. I like that rounder old school sound, as I use those Moongel damper pads just to take a bit of ring out of the tom, (but leaving that wide open unchoked sound) first off, since my 14" floor is a...

    Sm57's with Toms

They work just fine, especially when your overheads are picking up the toms when placed well...the initial thwack! you get from close mic'ng toms and more acurate panning are the benefits, if thats important to you. as a drummer, I tend to lean towards overkill (11 mics on drums at times) and...

    sytek and RNP similar sounding?

I would get the DMP3 for the two toms no doubt! I find that mic'ing the toms gives me that initial thwack! you dont always get from the overheads. even if you're using 57's on the toms, the dmp3 is ideal for that application....the RNP will not show much if any noticeable upgrade in sound on...

    sytek and RNP similar sounding?

depends!...how exactly are you planning to mic up your kit and how does your room sound (the bigger question)? for example: using the Sytek say for Overheads 1+ 2 and using Sytek 3 + 4 for kick and snare. You're pretty much ready to go, you now have to decide what else you're gonna mic. if its...
