Gear you purchased that were disappointments

Anything Electro-harmonix I appreciate the hype, advertising and cool sounding descriptions. Each one I ever got was a complete tone sucker. Sorry E-H

    Low-Watt tube recording amp

I have had LOTS of small tube amps. 5-30 watts. (I will assume you are thinking less than $500 here) The thing with some of them is that you need to determine your style. I LOVE the clean tones of the Fender Champion 600. The distortion is obtained by driving the gain (no other controls) and...

    Jack backwards

Most great songs start with a great melody. Then music and beats are added later. I have decided to make a CD jack backwards and it is turning out pretty nice if I say so myself. I am experimenting with new styles, so some of you just won't like it. I start with the drum beat, then add guitars...

    Favorite CDs?

Some will call it noisy, but to me, the Vinnie Vincent Invasion album titled "All systems go" has got to be the best sounding thing I have ever heard. There are literally dozens of guitar and vocal overlays. It is similar to Boston's sound. HUGE. Only huger! It's a rare CD, as it came in as...

    M-Audio DELTA-1010 PCI Card?

$200-300? Wow. I feel lucky. Got a used one on Ebay for $100. I was expecting a spectacular improvement from the stock card in my Dell. No noticable difference to me. Still, a good buy.

    Audix OM 7

Part of the problem may lie in the settings on the TC. with all of the gains within parameters, you may just be over driving the signal. I had one and trust me, its easy to do. Check your output level with the unit on and bypassed. The level should be the same. As far as mics go, the SM58 bleeds...

    You ever wonder... flip side

Simple. Ask a teen what they think about a big hit from 20 years ago. "that sucks" is what you get. Funny thing is, talent was a big issue in the past. Now it's optional. I went to Van's Warped tour and heard a few songs from 50 bands. For the most part it was crap. Same 4 chords, screeching...

    Recording Bass Guitar

#1 New strings #2 compress it big time post recording #3 EQ the tone you want. pre and post recording DI seems to be the best. Mic'ing seems to add to the problems you need to overcome. Good luck.

    Morpheus

I got the morpheus drop tone effect. It's a novel idea and most people will be satisfied with it, but from a pro, you'd better pass. It's a tone sucker and a volume sucker. I saw a you tube video that sold me on it, but in the real world it didn't work out so well. There is also a slight delay...

    Want Killer vocals?

Man I LOVE my TC Helicon Harmony G effect unit! It does verb, delay, chorus, compression, ect, but the fabulous thing is the harmonies. I had both Digitechs and this thing blows them all away. The harmonies are crystal clear. You can have 1 or 2 at a time. It is really foolproof also, as you...

    Micing a cab live

I've rarely heard a FOH guitar that sounds like the amp. A good tech can find it, but most don't care. The ideal thing is to get most of the sound directly from the guitar/bass amps. I like to use in ear monitors to keep the brain from melting. The most common is the SM57. Next might be the...

    Best microphone for certain price-range

BLUE mics are incredible. The cheapest one that's any good is the Bluebird. $300 new maybe $200 used. Make sure you have a decent preamp.

Awesome drink for singer & speakers

This stuff is great. Really works. Smooths out the voice, gives you extra control, tone and smoothness. (I don't sell it or work for them) PS dont get the mint flavor...nasty. http://www.drinkvocal.com/

    Amps?

There are 2 schools of "lesser knowns". 1. Boutique (very very high dollar but fabulous amps) 2. Overseas (usually cheaper in cost-quality varies) No need to mention boutiqes. The overseas brands can be good or bad. I have a Johnson Laredo 25 watt tube amp. About as loud as an expensive 5...

    stereo doubling that doesn't suck

I am hearing the doubled/panned vox, but they are essentially "in time" which does not create the effect you are so enamured by. What I hear effect wise is a pretty serious chorus effect on both vocal tracks. This is what gets the shimmery space. Keep in mind, a crappy chorus plug in can't do...

worth spending more than $1000 on a guitar?

It really depends on the company and model. American made guitars are made by $30/hr union workers. YOU are paying for the difference as compared to a $3/hr Korean sweatshop piece. American guitars have tighter specs. Try 10 Korean made guitars-same model and there will be differences, usually...

    Cigar Box Guitars

Slide guitar is a buzz once you get the hang of it. Cigar boxes are more of a novelty. The actually sound pretty crappy unless you put a pickup in it. I would suggest getting an acoustic-electric resonator guitar. The have way cool tone and are built to last, especially the brass ones.
