My go-to resource. I think that you're going to have to increase the budget a bit.

Suggestion to all of the gurus answering n00b questions

Obviously not every question can be answered in fifteen syllables or less, and often the correct response is to direct a question elsewhere. But if you can answer the question succinctly then do so. Too often it seems of late that respondents tell people to take the equivalent of a semester of...

    Vocal recording w/Zi8 for youtube

I was thinking about this and another thing you could do would be to purchase a battery powered mic such as the Rode NT3 small condenser and a XLR to 3.5mm cable. Strickly speaking the Rode is not marketed as a battery powered mic for video cameras like these are, but there's no reason it...

    Soundcard advice please!

Probably. It wouldn't be happy. A USB mic only works with a USB port. Like most pro and semi-pro gear the Focusrite uses XLR mics.

Suggestion to all of the gurus answering n00b questions

Just answer the question. It's wonderful that you want others to learn, and that you suggest stickies or other websites that have helped you, but first and foremost just answer the question. Asking for help should not necessitate an hour of required reading.

    Vocal recording w/Zi8 for youtube

The low end but adequate solution is to purchase something like the Studio 1 Productions XLR-BP Belt Clip XLR Adapter with XLR-BP adapter which allows you to run up to two mics (I'd recommend the Shure SM58) into the 3.5mm jack on the camera. You're looking at about $250 for both which is...

    Firewire to USB converter ?

There are devices that allow you to route a USB signal into a Firewire 800 port (Moshi iLynx 800 Advanced FireWire 800 / USB 2.0 Combo 99MO018202) but not vice-versa because prior to USB 3.0 the Firewire protocol was faster. Given that USB 3.0 is faster then Firewire 800... ...you may see...

Is there such a thing as a box for multiple mics into one input?

With some exceptions pretty much EVERYTHING gets mixed down to two tracks @ 44.1KHz so what you want to do is get something like a Behringer ULTRAGAIN PRO-8 Mic Preamp/Converter or a Nady PRA-8 that will run 8 inputs down to a single output which you can then feed into your mixer or whatever...

    Recording Chain (Front End)

You're going from a $1,000 microphone into a $1,200 boutique pre through a (I assume) $1,500 Empirical Labs distressor into a $2,500 A/D/A converter just to then run the signal into a $400 M-Audio firewire interface? Allrighty then. I'm using a Sennheiser MK4 large condenser or a Shure SM7B to...

You mean an intercom? My first thought was IFB but that would be serious overkill.

Uninterruptible Power Supply Power Backup for Home Recording Studio?

Pop over to Wal-Mart, get a couple of their 12V deep cycle RV batteries, wire them in parallel with good thick cables (positive to positive, negative to negative), buy a decent automotive trickle charger, and then splurge on a true sine wave inverter. You want to be able to pull at least 15amp...

    Need Home vocal booth advice.

Personally I'm of the opinion that there are SO MANY more important attributes that contribute to audio that anything more then a single solid preamp falls somewhere towards the end in terms of importance. First and foremost I'm for a quiet environment, secondly for a solid accurate monitor... I...

    Mic Preamp advice

You might give consideration to the MOTU Pre 4 @ $450. I'm looking at it's big brother, the MOTU Pre 8 @ $500 sometime next year. Lots of functionality for the money and MOTU has an excellent rep.

    Need Home vocal booth advice.

I liked #4 the best though all had a aspect that I would object to as a director where your delivery seemed stilted, nothing that couldn't be addressed and nothing having to do with your sound booth. Mind you I was listening on a pair of shi... ah... inadequate little speakers. I see from a...

Best Clip-On Mic for Congregation Speeches **Need Help**

+1 It's tough to beat Shure's price/performance. Though you would need to purchase the lavaliere mic separately, for absolute bullet-proof functionality you can look at Lectrosonic or Zaxcom. Those brands are targeted at production companies and their price reflects that market but if you're...

    Duet vs Mixer & Preamp

Shadow, You need to be brutally honest with yourself as to your budget and your needs. If you see a point in the near future where you are going to need four mic pres and you have the cash you would be doing yourself a disservice to purchase a piece of gear that only has two. If you can afford...

    Hello Folks

If you have friends who record you may find value in using what they use, and frequently you'll find 'limited edition' (LE) copies bundled with recording interfaces/soundcards as well as with other software. For example my copy of Sony SoundForge showed up... quite unexpectedly... when I...
