Desktop PC for new home studio; what do you suggest in the $500 range?

This is an example of what comes out of DealNews on a regular basis. Refurb HP AMD 6-Core 3.5GHz Desktop w/ 10GB RAM for $320 + free shipping - H3Z00AAR#A There is less-then-zero chance that you could build up a box with equivalent specs for $320. Win 8 alone costs over $100.

Desktop PC for new home studio; what do you suggest in the $500 range?

Broadly speaking 3GHz dual-core Pentium/i3 processor, 4GB RAM. Everything else is debatable. Dell has boxes that meet this criteria within your budget day in and day out, as does Lenovo. Depending on how hard you shop and how lucky you are you can get a lot of box for relatively little money if...

Dell Inspiron 660s desktop...would this be a good choice for home recording?

7,200 rpm is as good as it gets in HDDs now that the 10,000 rpm have been discontinued. I've never noticed a problem with using one. Don't let my rabid bargain-hunting philosophy color your perceptions.

Dell Inspiron 660s desktop...would this be a good choice for home recording?

The 660s with a Pentium 2.9GHz processor for $400 isn't the most screaming deal in the world but it should be adequate for recording.

What Do You Think Of This Mini PC?

I was in the PC game when you could choose between PC-DOS 1.1 and CP/M for your new 8MB IBM-PC and every once in a while I'll sit down with my 16GB dual-core tablet, my 500GB dual-core laptop, or my 1TB dual-core desktop and just marvel at the technology I take for granted. It'd be a kick to...

What Do You Think Of This Mini PC?

You misunderstand me... if you were to rank all of the things a PC can do for you surfing the internet is the absolute bottom of the list. Even word processing requires more horsepower. Audio processing (DAW) isn't the most power hungry app out there, but it's a lot more demanding then word...

What Do You Think Of This Mini PC?

Just sitting here in the middle of the night and I'll toss out some (probably incoherent) thoughts. There are dual-core... Atom Celeron Pentium i3 ...processors. In and of itself the phrase 'dual-core' doesn't tell you much. A single core Pentium might kick a dual-core Atom's ass. The power...

    2496 card

Meh. It's $61 at Maplin, $70 at B&H. Clearly this dinosaur has been discontinued. You'll probably be able to score one for $19.95 at geeks.com in a couple of months. I had a 1010LT and the drivers kind of sucked. I'd like to think that M-Audio did a better job with the 2496 but I kind of doubt it.

    2496 card

When they drop below $10 I'll buy one and put it in a shadow box to hang on the wall with an engraved plate that reads 'Break In Case of Emergency'.

I need a new PC, How does this look?

I agree with those arguing for off-the-shelf boxes. I recently purchased a Lenovo 3.4GHz i3 box w/4GB RAM and a 1GB HDD w/Win8 for $270. Now while that was a screaming deal that sold out damn near instantly even at the pre-sale price of $360 I could not come close to building that box from parts...

You've been here since forever and you JUST NOTICED??? ... anyway... As long as you have two audio tracks... say one captured by the camcorder, and one captured by a boom mic or en studio... PluralEyes will overlay the shitty audio track with the good audio track.

Need step-by-step instructions for recording midi keyboard

+1 MIDI is just data... zeros and ones. If your keyboard has MIDI IN then you could play/trigger your keyboard from your computer, but the MIDI OUT port on your keyboard will only allow you to play/trigger events/sounds on other devices.

    What kind of preamp?

What Keith is alluding to here is that he's using a Focusrite Scarlet 18i6 which has two (really quite decent) integrated preamps along with 6 additional 1/4" jacks which accept the output from his external pres. Preamps... like microphones... are religious topics. I'm moving from a Sound...

    Assembling a Music Video Kit

I didn't respond to this subset of your observations but I do have a Sound Devices USBPre 2 that serves double duty as a stand-alone field mixer that would feed directly into the camcorder, or optionally into a laptop so that aspect is reasonably covered.
