    Reference Cd For Tracking

I used to work at Sam Ash in the drum department. Yamaha has a CD that they gave away to compare the different sounds of woods used to make the drums....it was very involved. It had individual hits of each drum made of each wood for comparison.....and then had couple of tracks where the kit...

    Ever Notice...

This is a great thread. I just finished recording a demo for a guy, but we were joking around right before doing a vocal take, so I pressed record a little before he was expecting it. I called him an ass and then pressed record. The track starts off with him saying "that hurts my...

    Record it hot???

I really hope I'm not starting something back up here, but I started a new thread 'cause the last one was just too damn long. I have a couple questions/comments on the whole thing. 1) I'm not calling out any names, but I started off making the same mistake as a certain regular, until I...

Recording 4 People Live In Bedroom...Advice Please!

I know this comes a week after the original post, but I'd suggest trying to find a good spot for a single condenser on the drums....it'll take a while to find it, but it sounds okay once you get it....the hard part is being able to find that spot and yet still not have any interference from...

Recording with decent quality on my PC?

I just went out and bought an M-Audio Audio Buddy preamp for $50....it usually goes for around $60-$80.....it has phantom power, and output gain....all I think you'd need in a mic pre. I haven't noticed any problems with it yet, so I would say yes to the decent preamp for under $100. There are...

    Compressor

I bought the 3630 because it was $100. If I had $215 to put out towards a 3630 and a mod, I'm sure I'd save myself the time and energy and find myself a better comp for $200 or less....If I'm not mistaken, the RNC goes for $175, and I'd venture to say that's a much better investment....

    Treatment for Acoustic Gutair Room

I think you're getting the wrong picture I don't think you want to record acoustic guitar in a dead room. Obviously a harsh room may be too much, but a little natural reverb is nice. Like I said before, I've notice that a large room is pretty good, preventing an overload of reflection and...

    Compressor

    LMAO.....yeah....I guess you're right.....I didn't know that's what Alesis intended it for.....

    Compressor

I just wanted to thank everyone for all the help with my compressor issues. I was having problems with my Alesis 3630, and the general consensus was that my 3630 was the problem itself. So I ran back a.s.a.p. to Sam Ash to return the 3630 and got myself a dbx 266XL....I recorded some vocals...

Recording Bass direct and with mic

I may sound like a fool saying this, but I would hafta say leave it alone, and at least lissten to it....having a few ms delay between the direct and mic GIVES the ambient effect. You might like the way it sounds without matching up the wavs.

    Condenser?

If the term pre-editing was intended to mean "editing before" recording. It's not a contradiction within itself, jsut not a good idea. Or it could be used in the sense of "before editing"....like the pre-editing stage is the tracking stage...I don't know....I just like trying to figure out...

    Tracking A Beat...need help!

compare the beat with a metronome, you may find your problem there. Make sure your beat stays consistent....and if the beat changes, make sure the tempo of every instrument changes to the same tempo....maybe what you're trying to overlap isn't in time with what it was originally with (I tried...

    Changing drum tones

Okay, so I guess replacing them outright would probably be a possible solution, too...lol

need help with a Recording Setup

I almost said a bunch that basically would've just been a repeat of everything minofifa said. In general, buying a mixing console will probably set you off better than trying to upgrade your computer and/or soundcard, but if you have a GREAT computer and soundcard with 8 inputs, you're still...

need help with a Recording Setup

I'll start by saying that I'm a newbie myself, and much of what I say may be countered or improved upon by someone more knowledgable later, but I'm going to say a few things that I think may be helpful. If you have Cool Edit Pro, play around with it a lot, record a few waves into it using your...

    Changing drum tones

Okay....keep in mind that I am totally guessing here, but I have a couple ideas for you to try....it might not work for jack squat. It might be a little more likely to have success with the bass/hi hat track than the other track, but you might be able to split the bass from the hats, and who...

    Changing drum tones

Are the drums all in a single track, or are they separated? Are you looking to change the tones of the entire drum track as a whole, or looking to change the tones of everything separately? Personally, I have now idea to do anything without everything being separated.

    Catching that "warmth"

"warmth" I just want to add about the whole warmth thing. I agree with chessrock in saying that "warmth" is relative to the listener. But I would go as far as to say that warmth does exist, it's just very vague. I'll use an analogy like everyone else likes to. Defining "warmth" is like...

    Catching that "warmth"

I'll say up front that this is coming from an inexperienced source, but what I have PLENTY experience with is finding out the stupid mistakes I have been making. One of which is trying to figure out all that noise I was getting through the mic. I put it in front of the cab, and heard a bunch...

    Treatment for Acoustic Gutair Room

You gotta play with your sound and try everything out....I noticed that when I recorded an acoustic guitar in a pretty large room with no acoustic treatment, the natural reverb just added to the warmth of my recording. I liked the way it sounded. Then again, that's just personal preference...
