so you know..normalizing is a destructive measure..here is an alernative that is nondestructive. I will make my mix, and then send every track into a submix. This is my volume mix. I boost it around 6db or so and adjust it if I have peaks. I think my last mix was boosted around 4.5 db or so...

I automate issues like that....do it to vocals all the time..sometimes they get too loud, and i don't compress them, just bring them down a few clicks then draw them back up to fit the wave shape.

you have to do all this when you are tracking..not after words..so get that sound on your amp and then just high pass out the low shity frequencies when you mix..you may notch here or there, but the crunch has to be achieved before tracking. For a marshall style amp..keep your bass around...
