Jeff Lynne and ELO (Electric Light Orchestra)

Oddly enough I watched a Queen "Story of Bohemian Rhapsody" on YouTube a few days ago. It's worth checking out and it's split up into different parts. The English guy saying the lyrics in a serious tone is quite funny too. Here's the link to the first part...

Jeff Lynne and ELO (Electric Light Orchestra)

So you're saying that the sound of all those voices on a song like, "Don't Bring me Down" were just regularly recorded and had nothing added to them? If so, that is pretty wicked. But I'm no slouch regarding harmony arrangement, and when you hear their stuff it's almost as if Jeff Lynne had a...

Jeff Lynne and ELO (Electric Light Orchestra)

Well, you're in for a treat then ... here's a site that had the album info for "Out of the Blue" in the 70's. Scroll below and notice "Eventide Harmonizer" and other effects used. No doubt they double-tracked each voice, but I've done it and come nowhere near that sound of the backing vocals.

Jeff Lynne and ELO (Electric Light Orchestra)

I don't think a sixteen part harmony is something that can be pulled off. There would be doubled notes and stuff octaves apart, so it's almost counter-intuitive. I have fooled around with pitch shifting though, and it gets a pretty close result. I think it's because the pitch correction...

Jeff Lynne and ELO (Electric Light Orchestra)

Oh yeah, here's some samples if anyone hasn't heard of E.L.O. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZB-DUCrhVQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRnDW97nEXc It's all the background bits (harmonies/effects on them) I'm interested in.

Jeff Lynne and ELO (Electric Light Orchestra)

I wouldn't doubt it for a second :) It almost seems as though the harmonies are artificial in a way ... they have such a strange vibe to them. I read somewhere that on one of their albums they used an Eventide Harmonizer, whatever that does I'm not sure. I know someone will say, "it...

Jeff Lynne and ELO (Electric Light Orchestra)

Hey everyone, it's been a while since I've been on here. I was wondering if anyone has any idea on how Jeff Lynne achieved the harmony sound during his ELO era? I'm not sure if it's more in the arrangement area, or is it just a harmonizer from back in the day? I can't find anything on the net...

Urgh... Might get flamed for this...

I agree that it's good to at least have a background of music theory before you dive into keys and all that. Play around with some Beach Boys songs like "Surfer Girl" or "In My Room" and analyze them. You'll notice there are interesting shifts and different keys in alot of their music, stuff...

    chorus during pop songs

For the most part, everything is practically doubled. I'm no pro by any means, but I notice this is done often. It may be tedious recording the same vocal line a couple of times as well as guitar, but the overall sound will be "pushed up" more sonically speaking. A chorus is a fairly short...

    Need help with ripping vocals

Well, it can be done, but it sounds like poop most of the time. You'll definately notice an overall quality decline whenever you do this little trick, it's almost better to just try and record the song yourself ... just learn all the little bits that you need to and record them. It may not...

    Still Trying

Where do your songs first take form?

My Songs Usually the come from playing around on the guitar until I get something I like, or a new approach I've been doing is to carry my Mp3 player (it has a mic thingy that lets you record notes or whatever but I use it for song ideas) and while I'm taking a walk something might just kinda...

    Am I the ONLY one?????

Well ... Nickelback has found their formula. Same thing with Coldplay and other bands ... there are so many that do this. They found something that worked, and I'm sure there's pressure from the label to put similar stuff out so they get the same results. I just recently watched a new...

    Song called "Time"

Hehe you guessed it. I went a little crazy with the reverb on this one, only 'cause I read they wash everything in that on their recordings. The guitar is real, just did a little EQ on it to give it a different sound. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll definately lose all that crazy verb on my...
