Throw it on the deck and try it. If its sticky, you will know almost immediately. The test tape I bought was so bad it would barely play on my deck. A little bit of oxide on the heads and tape path is not gonna permanently damage anything, so don't be afraid to play the tape.
If its sticky...
great advice. loud amps can sound deceivingly "good". You ain't gonna sound exactly like the deftones without a considerable $$ investment in gear.
the question is: why do you want to sound exactly like somebody else?
$225 used?
yeah, I would jump on that. I haven't seen many used mics on ebay, so its tough to get an idea of the average market value of these mics in used condition.
definitely looking to save a few bucks buying used, I think I can get new for about $315 includuing shipping, which is a pretty good price.
Is $275 a fair price used?
I don't want to pry it out of anybody's hands if they were not looking to sell!
You just need an interface that has 8 analog ins.
This is why I love my Mackie Onyx mixer. Its a front end for my 8 track R2R and interface for my DAW. With the FW option I could stream up to like 16 or 20 channels to DAW.
This is, in my opinion, an EXTREMELY flexible setup. Track whatever...
eh, I think thats alot to spend on something that is ONLY gonna be used for toms. when you are on a budget, its all about versatility.
If it were me, I would buy the MD421 and use that on like the floor tom, then use whatever other dynamics I have on the rack toms.
by the way, I would take the Mackie Onyx mixer over a 30 year old Tascam in a heartbeat. Soundcraft is probably also preferable over Tascam.
and I don't know what analogkid is getting at with this comment:
"Honestly, even when it was cutting edge the MX-5050 wasn't worth that kind of coin!"...
before you buy into the big analog mythos, I recommend you do this:
1- buy a good pair of headphones for monitoring and critical listening ($100-$150)
2- buy a modest 2 channel FW interface for your computer (something like the Presonus Inspire. $150 new)
Aside frome mics, thats really all you...
wow, what a trainwreck. prolly a fake account, but if not, here's my 2 cents...
1- there is little to no "room sound" in a close mic'ed guitar amp, so
2- get a real amp that actually sounds good and
3- forget about "better preamps"
4- it doesn't sound like you are ready for multiple mics yet...
eh... gain shouldn't be a problem, I can always squeeze some more gain out of the channel on my Otari MX5050 if I need it. I haven't run into headroom problems with my SM57s/i5 yet, in fact, I usually need to attenuate the signal to tape because its way too hot. I record loud amps!
I guess a...
so I'm thinking about my next mic purchase... prolly gonna save up for a bit, but I wanna go with a dynamic.
I have a couple SM57s and an Audix i5 in the arsenal, but I want something better, along the lines of EV RE-20, Shure SM7, sort of next level up from the SM57 class of mics...
I'm...
I should add that this is also kinda the case with the onyx series as well. that, and the EQ/insert is not in the recording send. There is a mod to get it set up that way (which I am gonna eventually have done on mine). plus the Onyx stuff is prolly 2 or 3 times as much as you pay for some of...
