Write music first or lyrics first?

There needs to be an option for "music only."

Thoughts on cables $/value. Where do you draw the line?

I don't know how to do that. :( I'm planning on taking some audio engineering classes at my community college, maybe they'll talk about that.

Thoughts on cables $/value. Where do you draw the line?

I wish I could afford some nice cables, but who can afford it? I just had to buy some new xlrs to hook up my new sub, the pro cos were $30, the monsters would have been $80.

    Theory In Metal

Depending on the band, sometimes those modal ideas do creep into songs (though I would say E Phrygian is more common than Dorian or pentatonic. That Phrygian II chord is very common.) Saying that any style with any sophistication is *always* in a single key/mode is indicative of a pretty...

Can I lock in Reason 3.0 to play simultaneously w CEP 2?

I don't think so with CEPro. You can with Audition, however (they added ReWire with v1.5).

    What happend to Aardvark??

Yeah, they went out of business over 2 years ago. They have a new company that's making a master clock (Antelope) but they don't support the Aardvark gear. The only place to get drivers now is on the internet (some guy's website), and there's no driver for AMD or dual-core. I have a 2496, but...

    Bigger monitors or subwoofer?

The problem with that is that on my last gig, clients wanted to come to the mixing session and I had to tell them they couldn't. The alleged reason was that I'm "remodeling" but the real reason was that there's no way a client is going to be able to "listen through" the fact that there's no...

    Yamaha PSR-E403

Theoretically that's true; in my own case I've never found it appealling enough to actually practice on a non-weighted keyboard or a keyboard with fewer than a full complement of keys.

    Yamaha PSR-E403

It's the mechanics in place to make the plastic keys feel like a piano.

    Yamaha PSR-E403

What are you planning on using it for? I'd say that could be good for a real beginner that isn't planning on recording anything with it. The action isn't realistic, though. If you have space and can find one in the paper I'd get a real piano, they're conservatively 1,000,000x more fun to play...

    hr.com ROCKS! Equipment curiosity

It is an acceptably good card with decent convertors and reliable drivers. You will want to upgrade if you ever want more channels, but it's fine for 2x2. You will not, however, be able to plug your mic into it. It has RCA ins only. They're good but they're a bit boutiquey: for the price...

    Bigger monitors or subwoofer?

Alright, I found zzounds selling the rp10s for $220, so I got that. I should know by next week whether it helps or not...

Blending a sample and tight drums perfectly..

I don't know much about SP-12s, in Cubase, Logic et al it's a feature that let's you create a grid out of the events in an audio track, and then you can snap midi notes to the grid.

Blending a sample and tight drums perfectly..

Recycle the drum beat and then create a groove quantize out of the instrumental loop. EDIT: that won't work in Cool Edit, though, you'd need a sampler and a midi sequencer.

Upgraded my setup and am very disappointed.

I've heard that before: that ASIO is not good in Sonar. They didn't support VST for the longest time either (do they now?). I think Cakewalk has got a beef with Steinberg and don't like to adopt their standards.

Solved Creating depth in a mix

You can do it with reverb, it just takes some tweaking.

    Bigger monitors or subwoofer?

A nicer pair of monitors is not an option at this point. The question is: is a sub going to be better or worse than no sub. EDIT: so I guess the thread title is kind of misleading. I was getting prices as I was typing.

    Bigger monitors or subwoofer?

Ok, I think I'm going to go forward with getting a KRK 10" - Event has a competing unit but it only has RCA outs to the monitors(!?). What steps should I take to calibrate the setup?

Compress individual tracks or Compress groups of tracks?

It would be more typical for things to be compressed individually and then maybe a limiter over the whole mix. You wouldn't want, for example, a loud snare crack to alter the level of everything else in a noticeable way.

What do you do to inspire a vocalist's performance?

Only problem with that is, a lot of times people sing out of tune when they only hear their voice through the inside of their heads. In my experience anyways. One thing I've tried to get a more lively performance is to move the microphone away from the performer physically. "Okay, I want to...
