    Drum Mic suggestions

May be worth a try for you to put a mic in the kick, if nothing else you can at least say that you've tried it. I never bothered to mic the toms for a few reasons, a) overheads should catch the toms, b) didn't have enough xlr ports on my old mixer (MW12) and c) I didn't use the toms that much...

    Drum Mic suggestions

On the HC forum there was a fellow who posted a clip of his kit where he just used one SM57 and, it was pretty solid. Though as in this video, his kick was also a bit weak in tone. Aside from that though it's pretty damn good, less certainly can be more. guitaristic: The kick mic in the...

    Recording drums

I had a set of these that came in the CAD seven piece set and, with proper placement they actually weren't too bad. One may do the trick depending upon the room you're recording in and, perhaps how many cymbals you're using. I had a medium sized kit with seven cymbals (including hats) and I...

    Mix Consistency

Thank-you for your responses guys. I'm just getting back into recording after a couple of years of hiatus so, it's very much like learning how to do this all over again.

You guys are gonna love this...

EZ dummer and ez drumkit from hell plug-in isn't absolute crap but, it's just as gratifying as using a real kit. Maybe some other people don't mind it? I actually started out some years ago using ezd/ezdfh and while the samples are decent for a program, I personally felt that I needed to just...

    Mix Consistency

I've been reading quite a few threads that have taken place here over the years, all the variables are making my head spin! Thus far, most of my reading has been in the Mixing Techniques forum, the thread on "Software vs Hardware" that started in October '02 was incredibly fascinating. I...

You guys are gonna love this...

This is definitely more disturbing than ez drummer. I've actually had to use ezdfh before (for preliminaries) because, I was in between kits and it really is not a proper substitute for the real thing so, I can't imagine ez mix will suffice for the real deal.

Whats a great DAW software for recording?

I've tried most of the more popular DAWs except for PT but, I prefer Reaper above all others simply because, it's very user friendly. I don't do very much ambient or synth sort of work but when I do, I use FL8 XXL to build tracks and then convert them to midi for use in Reaper.

Does playing a certain instrument affect your mix?

I would say this tends to help when mixing. I started off playing guitar, then went to playing bass and then started playing the drums. When it came to mixing as there were songs in my old band where I played every thing and, my focus was trying to find good placement and a sense of balance for...

Why not mix an album in mono?

Haha, yes. I had missed it once in Seattle when I lived in WA, and then I missed it again when it more recently came to Vancouver, BC but, I eventually caught a link from metal forum I frequent.

    Speakers Vs. Headphones?

Good point. I've been trying to spend more time here reading than posting and, you do seem to know your stuff SSG. I'll also admit as, it's clearly evident that there's a lot I don't know yet about recording.

Why not mix an album in mono?

I actually like Good Friend's mindset. In regards to the latter half of this thread and wax cylinders, older forms of technology are sort of coming back, at least in more underground music, especially vinyl. I really can not speak for most genres but, black metal in particular is a big one...

    Speakers Vs. Headphones?

This is some thing I am familiar with. I can recall some mixes where the vocals are just plain overbearing, there does seem to be a bit of a trick to finding the sweet spot for getting the vocals in the mix. As my lead guitarist would say, "Most vocals sound like they're on top of all the music".

    Speakers Vs. Headphones?

I must say, very interesting perspectives from every one on this subject. Now, as far as I know, monitors are for flat frequencies to give a pure, unbiased presentation of the recording. It's very possible that I missed it while reading through all the responses but, it seems like every time...

    why......

Very interesting. In all my time on the HC drum forum I've either missed or, just never seen this sort of OH set-up. I'm definitely going to give this a try.

    Yamaha MW10 Trouble!!!

It sounds like perhaps you've misentered the cd-key/serial number - though I imagine you've tried re-entering it a few times by now. You can try to update the drivers as, it never hurts to do so any ways but, I don't imagine it will solve the problem of Cubase LE interacting with the serial...
