    Tube amps >$350

Well, that's not a tube amp. And while I'm no stickler for tubes, the OP did ask for tube amp suggestions.

    Tube amps >$350

You could use the wah, a stomp, delay, and rotary/mod stuff from a MFX without all the amp models...

    Tube amps >$350

I just did a shootout of an SCXD vs the older Cyber-Champ over at FG(see sig) and while I did rather enjoy the cleaner sounds of the SCXD, I couldn't really bond with any of the higher gain (even cranked Fender) tones. At low volumes and for recording classic Fender-esque clean tones it...

    Tube amps >$350

Outside of the normal Fender, Crate, Epiphone, and Peavey responses... There's the Pignose G40V. A rather nice amp with a less than perfect EQ circuit. None the less, meets your price target. With a mod to make the EQ a little more traditional (and effective) it would be a very good amp. You...

Recommend a fairly inexpensive solid state amp for abrasive tones

Tones are completely subjective and really not part of my suggestion, I'm responding to the "high quality" portion of the question. I just listed a bunch I've tried before (and a couple I haven't). I've owned (or have had long term access to) Fender, Marshall, Tech 21, Yahmaha, and Roland...

Recommend a fairly inexpensive solid state amp for abrasive tones

In my experience, Crate does not make high quality amps and would likely be pretty far down my list. I'm not very familiar with the tones you're looking for, but the best (YMMV) affordable solid state amps pretty much come form the big names in amps. Fender's older FM line, Marshall...

best 5 string bass strings for drop c?

+1 you get the best of both worlds. The rattle from the reduced tension on the string and an extended high end.

Interesting listening test: modelers vs. the real vintage amps

I know what your talking about. If I could afford a room full of vintage amps, I likely would. But I don't for a second believe that tube automatically = good. there are plenty of tube amps (especially modern lower end ones) which are easily out performed by modellors and solid state amps...

Interesting listening test: modelers vs. the real vintage amps

I definitely don't hear anything particularly harsh, but everyone's perception is different. In fact after knowing which one is correct I went back and listened and felt the actual amp is darker in almost every clip...in a bad way! I guess your harsh = my presence. Maybe my ear is just...

Interesting listening test: modelers vs. the real vintage amps

Well, your ears are clearly far better than mine (and the panel of pro recording engineers in the article)!

Interesting listening test: modelers vs. the real vintage amps

Wow, I did terrifically bad. However, consistently terricially bad. I picked Amp Farm for both Marshall clips, Amp Farm for the first Vox clip (got the second correct), and Amplitube Jimi Hendrix for both Fender clips. For whatever reason, the real clips in almost every case give themselves...

    no fx loop

The only way to run your fx post preamp would be to mod the amp which will likely cost more than the amp is worth so if it's really important for you to run your fx post preamp then it may be time to get a new amp. on the other hand...remember, there was a time when no amp had an effects loop...

    Pro Audio 9 File migration

No, you can't simply copy the .wrk files as the audio usn't part of that file. The only 100% safe way is to open the files and save them as bundles (.bun) files. A bundles includes the .wrk and all audio files and can be transported to different machines.

When + why do YOU multitrack guitars

Double tracking has a unique sound which can't be faked. That being said, you have to be careful in building up too big a guitar track. I remember a Godsmack tune that just had this thunderous guitar sound. Then came the solo which sounded horribly tiny by comparison. I'm not a metal player...

    Digitech Whammy Makin Me Crazy

Huh??? The Whammy is capable of tones a whammy bar can not get. Anyway. If you can't move the presets, you might try ditching it in favor of one of the new models from the RP line. The 500 nails the Whammy (and a whole lot more) and features an excellent bypass (advertised as true bypass)...

Interesting argument for the difference between cheap & non-cheap guitars...

Perhaps a double blind test with an American PRS and similarly styled import would be a more appropriate test. Can't speak for the Charvelle (Charvel?), but PRS are known for having a little bit more spank in the highs than your traditional dual humbucker guitar which people often translate to...

    Best Bass Plugin?

In the long run, a real bass will sound the best. However, in a pinch Independence Free works like a charm. I use it for a bunch of the clips over at FrugalGuitarist.com.

    Best Bass Plugin?

Ain't nothing like the real thing. That should be your first choice. That being said, the Yellow Tools Independence Free VST has an incredibly realistic bass sample set including a bunch of slides and automatically triggered fret noise. The app also has amp/cab/mic modeling and a slew of...
