What higher-level mixing techniques are a MUST for professional sounding stuff?

Good point Drew. Would you mind elaborating on what you mean by 'thinking about gain staging' a little more so others who are following along here can discuss as well? I'm of the opinion that is does very much matter, regardless of weather a signal is in the DAW yet or not. Perhaps if anyone...

What higher-level mixing techniques are a MUST for professional sounding stuff?

Its been a month since the OP, but I had some thoughts I'd figured I'd share anyway. At the absolute highest level of this industry mixing, technique has very little to do with audio processing tricks. When I say absolute highest level, I'm talking about media projects that enter the audio...

What higher-level mixing techniques are a MUST for professional sounding stuff?

In my opinion it isn't genre dependent. Its more application dependent. To me, it comes down to the question of achieving control over a certain range of frequencies, only at certain times, without damaging everything else going on around it. Vs just bring all of 400 hz down and whatever happens...

For the ambient folk...how to create smooth pads/drones?

Dude. This is all about the source. You need to spend a lot of time studying the field of subtractive synthesis. A short answer to your question, the wobbles and bumps are caused by filter synchronization and low frequency oscillator management. Learn what's going on there, and you'll have...

What higher-level mixing techniques are a MUST for professional sounding stuff?

Hi DivineJames. I see you're new here, welcome to the forum. I respectfully disagree with both of these comments, though I won't take anything away from BSG and Massive Master's experience. They are certainly great guys to get advice from! Here's a good example of how I use Multi-Band...

Stacking compression effects. Valid, or unforgivable crime against recording methods?

cfg, I very much agree with Adrian here, but there's a wide range of what can 'sound good'. It comes down to what people expect. And your own expectations matter very much. A direct answer - prevailing theory is a clear 'yes'. Prevailing practice is also 'yes.' I chain up compressors on a...

Mixing Question: Problems getting healthy dynamics range, re: vocals

Ok... I have this thing ready to send this back to you. How do I pack a Reaper file to send the thing back. Do I just zip the entire folder Amazing Grace Amazing Love folder and deliver the whole thing? Or is there a cleaner way to do it from inside Reaper? Tesgin, you'll have a few plugins...

Mixing Question: Problems getting healthy dynamics range, re: vocals

Hey Tesgin, I was pretty booked today, I still haven't had a chance to go in and consolidate those files. I'll try to get them sent back to you tomorrow. Just letting ya know I haven't forgotten about this.

Mixing Question: Problems getting healthy dynamics range, re: vocals

Yeah... that wasn't gonna happen lol. That's what I thought too... surprise surprise lol. I copy pasted the bass line into the verses, and tweaked the drum settings. I used his midi track. The delete button went a long way. Sure you do... go ahead and give it a shot :)

Mixing Question: Problems getting healthy dynamics range, re: vocals

I did a lot of fiddling with the drums. I layered several snares and had to play with the internal controls to blend them, I also had to spend some time fiddling with the envelope and ASDR filters. Its a bit much to try and describe, would probably make more sense seeing the session. One thing I...

Mixing Question: Problems getting healthy dynamics range, re: vocals

Here it is. I can't figure out how to embed it on this forum. Hey Tesgin, was totally thinking Audio Adrenaline on this one!! lol. Good ole' nostalgic CCM. Some of the guitar parts were unsalvageable so I dumped them. The whole track is mixed with 3 plugins. Classic compressors, and Scheps...

Mixing Question: Problems getting healthy dynamics range, re: vocals

Got it! Thanks. And now I know how to send it back to him too lol. If I used any plugins that weren't on his list I duplicated the track, then committed the plugins, then muted the duplicate. That way he can see what I used but he can also hear whats printed. I have all his plugins, and I...

Mixing Question: Problems getting healthy dynamics range, re: vocals

This is very much on topic. I don't have any problems with your freeware, but you're in VERY bad need of two incredibly important compressors. You need a FET and an optical compressor plugin. For anyone mixing music, these are the two most important plugins in someones collection. They are...

Mixing Question: Problems getting healthy dynamics range, re: vocals

Hey guys, I still want to take a crack at this, but I think Tesgin is having trouble packing and zipping the complete Reaper session with the files folder in order to send it. He's sent everyone else Wave files, but I want a copy of his actual DAW session with the drum plugin in it and routed...

Mixing Question: Problems getting healthy dynamics range, re: vocals

Hey man... We have a low level hurricane/tropical storm dumping water all over South Carolina.... I've had the studio shut down all day because power lines can go out and cause surges. I gotta wait until this storm passes by before I can give those files a good look

Mixing Question: Problems getting healthy dynamics range, re: vocals

Hey Tesgin, Miro had a pretty good idea of just working through the session and building a mix. I'll do a quick one for ya too if you'd like. For mine you can leave everything as-is. Just dropbox/google drive/WeTransfer the entire thing. I have Reaper and Addictive to no need to render those to...

Mixing Question: Problems getting healthy dynamics range, re: vocals

I think he needs to do more than this. I believe the balance problems actually start from inside his presets on XLN Addictive drummer. I don't know if he has enough control over them without re-routing the drum mix into a multi-out feed then disabling the kit piece processing inside the drum engine.

Mixing Question: Problems getting healthy dynamics range, re: vocals

No problem. Here to help. That wouldn't do much good. I can hear a lot of the things going on behind the vocals but its difficult to suggest a correction without a little more info. Ooooh! Sorry. I meant the mix. I won't jump to conclusions and insist the entire thing needs to be re-tracked...
