    PCI or Firewire 800?

PCI: Proven, matured technology with a higher bandwidth than Firewire. And PCI interfaces are usually cheaper than their firewire counterparts. Might? Sure. Actually happening? Hard to tell but nowadays not something to worry a great deal about, at least from my not so humble experience.

    Firewire 410 vs. Firewire Audiophile

I'd go for the audiphile + MG10/2 then. The mixer will give you a lot more flexibility and will most likely still be of use by the time you may want to upgrade the interface to something with more i/o for instance. From what I've heard others say, the MG series is well worth its price.

    Laptop Processor Questions

I'd go for a Pentium M/Centrino laptop because that has already proven itself as a good audio platform and they last a lot longer on a battery charge.

If you want to aim high when it comes to converter quality, you're probably better off with this one: http://www.rme-audio.com/english/firewire/ff800.htm I ordered one yesterday. The I/O options just make me drewl.

    PCI or Firewire 800?

I've had a 410 only for a short while. I've had an Audiophile for the last 10 months or so which suited my needs better (until now). Yes, I'm giving up on PCI but only for mobility.

    PCI or Firewire 800?

Unless you want to use it with a laptop or a mac that doesn't have PCI slots, it's best to stick with PCI. You can use a PCI interface while other PCI cards are installed. However it's best to make sure that they aren't sharing the same IRQ (check the system properties for that). I just ordered...

    M-Audio Firewire and Windows 98

From the M-Audio site: minimum system requirements (PC) Pentium III 500 MHz w/ 128MB RAM Windows 2000 (SP4) / XP (SP1) DirectX 8.1 or higher 6-pin FireWire port or adapter So no, Win98 isn't supported. Which is quite common with today's audio interfaces.

    Headphone Amps in the UK

I have an HA4700. It works well. It has nice features like mono sum per channel. The quality isn't as good as the headphones out on my Mindprint DI-Port for instance but for me it is good enough for monitoring.

Need advice about a soundcard for a laptop

As cheapest solution the Esi Quatafire 610 comes to mind: http://www.esi-pro.com/viewProduct.php?pid=16&page=1 for around $400,-. If you have more to spare, check out Motu (828MkII, 896), M-Audio (18/14), RME (Fireface 800).

    M-Audio Transit USB

I assume USB sound interfaces work for some people or else they would have been taken off the market by now. I just don't think that anyone should take the chance.

    M-Audio Transit USB

I've owned a Transit for about a week. It was a nightmare. On my laptop it would work for like 30 seconds (with clicks and pops) before it would lose sync completely. On my desktop I could get it to work to such a point that it would click roughly every few minutes. That's still not good enough...

I just want to start over... is it even possible???

It's a known fact that installing SP2 can cause incompatibilities. MS chose to risk that, so they wouldn't have to compromise added security features in the service pack. I suspect you also have spyware running on your PC. There is software like Ad-Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy, CWShredder...

The MkII also has Wordclock I/O and separate inputs for the preamps, leaving you with 8 line level inputs instead of 6.
