I like the balance on your mix too - The bass drum has a nice "spongy" feel that is quite attractive. Some really inventive use of effects to fill out the stereo spectrum & create some little "special moments" too. I love that little stutter delay on the snare at the pre-chorus break! I...

Very well balanced, nice clean mix - vocals sound great - very clear, with perfectly judged ambiance - Nice full low end, drums sound is really crisp, without any muddiness or boxiness - sweet! About the only thing I personally would have preferred is a little more "room" around the drums - the...

Amen! Totally with you on that. Yeah, this is so true. Drum triggering doesn't have to automatically mean drum replacement. Very "transparent" results can be achieved by blending. Trigger is very good, and in some cases can save time. However, virtually every midi capable DAW available...

I think this is the key isn't it? Well, I guess it's hard to know what the judges views are - we can only assume that since they've permitted it, in all fairness, it shouldn't really have a bearing - but who knows? Life isn't always fair ... ...the thing is that many people view samples as an...

I dunno...to put all us amateurs in our place, maybe? ;) Maybe they haven't got enough work because home studio dudes have learned all their secrets & are turning out pretty decent mixes these days, so there's nothing better for them to do... really... who cares? :D

I have an old saying I keep in mind for when these conundrums raise their ugly heads: "It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission" :D

You're right, it is a slippery slope. The digital world allows us as mixers to tamper infinitely with the source, which can really open a Pandora's box of tastelessness... Please correct me if I'm wrong, but your questions seem to imply that relatively recent innovations like drum...

I found the trick to getting the most out of the kick is gating - like most live kicks, it needs a fairly hefty dose of both reductive (high pass subs & dip low-mids) & additive (lows & high mids) equalization This is tricky - I found my traditional gating approach didn't work at all - I ended...

Can you just change your routing? Maybe create another buss, run everything but the kick into it & run the kick into another buss? That way, you could turn "everything else" down proportionately to the kick & keep your automation intact.

    That might do the trick!

Have you tried high passing the kick around, say 30-50hz?

Listening on my studio monitors this time - Nice. I feel the kick could do with less sub lows & more punch around the 100hz area, as well as a little bit of bite in the high mids around 4k to bring out the attack.

You might want to trim a little low end off the kick. You've got a lot of sub-bass happening there. Also could do with trimming a little around 200hz out of the kick would clean the low end up too. To link your mix, you have to join the Gearfest contest "Group" & then "add" your mix to that...

Hey Taylor, I had a listen to your mix with my Sennheiser HD 650 headphones, so I might be missing some info happening way down low, but generally I really enjoyed your mix. It has a very "vintage" tonality, with slightly subdued highs and mids, and the reverb on the vocals absolutely nails...

Just copy the code in the address bar at the top of your mix's Soundcloud page and past it between the two Soundcloud things.
