    Bluegrass Instrumental

Maybe if I panned the dobro and snare away from each other...probably a good idea to give them their own spaces, anyway.

Thank you all. Yes, the percussion is a brush on snare. I panned it somewhat to the right for the duration of the song. However, I think when I recorded the bass, there was some track bleed, which may explain why it may shift around...although I honestly can't hear it here. The solution is...

I cordoned off an 8.5 x 10.5 end of my office shed for personal rehearsal and recording ideas and tunes. My pickin' nook:

    Kilby Jail

Not before blues and jazz, but the melody is close to two or three other popular songs I can think of starting with the Carter Family "Thinking Tonight of my Blue Eyes." They were popular during the Great Depression and influential in Country, Folk and Bluegrass music to this day. I'm guessing...

    Kilby Jail

When I go flat, I don't think it's because the note is out of my range. Its more likely because I don't know what I'm doing or don't always hear the pitch. Back in the 90's, the guy I worked for said sometimes I sound like the Grand Ole Opry, but most of the time I'm all over the place. Maybe...

    Kilby Jail

Thanks for giving the update a listen. Yes, sir. I did copy and paste the chorus, but even if I didn't there is a good chance it would be flat every time. I tend to sing flatter than a duck's ass.

    Kilby Jail

Thank you for the kind compliment. I used a Sennheiser 421 and a Millennia HV3 for everything except the vocals, which were recorded with an SM 58 into a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. I have other mics that do a great job, sitler mod Oktava mk012s, AKG 414b UlS, AT 4050, but I wanted to keep it...

    Kilby Jail

Flatt and Scruggs, Jimmy Martin and Bill Monroe all recorded with drums over the years. You can't get any more bluegrass than that. They usually mixed them down where they weren't very forward in the mix.

Thank you for your help. Here is my plan. I will go back and mix the drums up and make them more present, but not too much up front. I will delete and recut the rhythm guitar, banjo backup, mandolin rhythm and bass. I used a mastering preset in Ozone 4 to bring the volume and brighten up...

Angel On Paper - Bluegrass Tune

Thanks, Nola. I'm a banjo player, so my banjo probably always has the deadest strings :). I added a mandolin rhythm to kinda replace the snare, which I left in the mix, but at a lower level. I let the back beat drop off a bit in the chorus to let it breathe more.

Angel On Paper - Bluegrass Tune

This song was written by a friend. I played and sang all the parts, going for a traditional bluegrass sound. Comments and suggestions are welcome. Thank you for listening. Angel On Paper

    ELECTRO-VOICE EV RE10 & 635A Dynamic Omnidirectional

I believe the RE10, RE15 and RE16 are similar mics. The RE16 is still in production. They are nice smooth midrangy mics that are forgiving off axis with minimal proximity effect. The off axis forgiveness is what they are designed for. The 635A omni, also still in production, used to be seen...

    Fifty dollar mics

I just picked up 3 old EV BK-1 condenser mics for $25 each in working condition. Gonna try them at a gig tomorrow playing bluegrass. 5 piece banjo, mando, guitar bass and fiddle. Three singers. I am inclined to try them for vocals. Any opinions? I also have 3 d770s and six of those...

    Browns Fery Blues (bluegrass track)

Thank you. The tracks really have nothing but some reverb, panning and then the over all mix loudened a bit. I would say the "dull vocal" and "needs more air" comment are kinda related. I, too, prefer a tighter thumping bass sound, but I don't know how to get it. EQ? Compression? Push the fader?

    Guitar Mandolin & Banjo

Some quick little recordings with an EV RE15 as the only mic Other gear used: Millennia HV3 pre & Lucid AD converter into the SPDIF of an Akai DPS 24. I mix them down onto an M-Audio Microtrack via SPDIF out and use a mastering preset in Ozone before converting to mp3 and uploading. Bugle...
