    Song Structuring..

John and Paul wrote about any and every thing. Nothing was ignored though it might not have been put on a record. The White album is a fine example of that. Silly songs, nonsense, blues & ballads. Even an attempt at Stockhausen. I'm not meaning to ignore the efforts of George and Ringo.

A looper. Cool. Any brands that are better than others or to steer clear of?

    A music sound card

Thanx! I appreciate the help. I'm thinking something external may be the way to go when this laptop finally wears out.

    A music sound card

I use Finale, music notation software. I don't record. I need something that will sound better than the Realtek card that's in the laptop. If there's an external one that's fine. I'm think what I need is something that is used for listening. Funny that the samples on the Internet sound...

    A music sound card

Any suggestions for a good sound card that a musician can afford? I use Garritan sounds with Finale and the current sound card, Realtek, doesn't cut it. No gaming, just music.

    Midi keyboard - 25-key vs 49-key?

I use a Korg K25 (discontinued) Studio Controller quite lot. It works very well with Finale. 25 keys is plenty because the octaves can be changed in an instant and allows it to have the range of an 88 keyboard. It's also powered by the USB port of the laptop. There's an AC but I've never...

Down sized to 5w tube for gigs.

In the 70's, when I was a rocker, we had two trucks to carry our gear and some roadies. We were loud, mainly influenced by Deep Purple and the like. I remember a West, Bruce and Lange concert. West and Bruce had 3 Marshall stacks each! I was on the front row. OUCH! Now that I'm older and...

Did you try my advice? If not you should because it works every time.

Very true. If you don't sound good then you aren't going to sound good.

Suggestions? Digital delay for live performances on Electric Bass

I'm wanting a pedal, I think, that will record about 30 seconds and allow for extra layers to be added. By the way, money is a big issue so $200 is the limit. I don't expect studio quality. I just want another arrow in the quiver. The last echo I used was an Echoplex in the 70's. Any...

Sound guys have their idea of what things should sound like and it's mostly due to what they listen to for personal enjoyment. I try to be as nice as I can even if I don't like it. Some techs know the specs and tech talk but they don't understand sound. I like the natural sound of a P Bass...

Have you ever started learning a guitar solo....

Here's what I do and what I teach my students. The hard part is doing it. If you have the notes and rhythms then it will be easier. Start with your best friend (metronome or drum machine) and set it to where you can play it 90% without mistakes. Let's say we start off at 100 bpm. Play it...

String change time just reduced by 50%

I've used one for years. Ever try to string an upright bass? True story. Grandson and I were changing strings. He was in charge of the drill. I attached it to the peg and he carefully started it up. Nothing happened. I checked it out and said start it again. In about 15 seconds BANG...

I use a Walter Woods M-100. Love it. 100 watts and 7lbs. I use an EV sx100 for the speaker, 12" with a horn and 30lbs. The double bass sounds very good as does the Fender P. Each channel of the Woods processes the type of instrument. Channel 1 is for fretted bass and 2 is for fretless...

    Decent $500 5 String Bass

You're not going to find a very slender neck on a 5 string. A student of mine found a new discontinued Schecter 5 string. It's decent and cost less than $500. Rosewood neck. Check out used gear, too. Personally I'm a Fender player when it comes to electric bass.

    Alcohol and Songwriting

Frank Zappa didn't use drugs or alcohol. It certainly sounded like he did but he didn't.
