    Clicky Bass Drum Sound

Every Pantera kick stroke is a sample of a 24" Tama with a 1" washer taped to the head.

    satin vs gloss

AFAIK, the difference between satin and gloss finishes is the polish. I know for sure that satin finishes tend to wear glossy.

Recorderman sounds very mono. Is this right?

That would do it. Nah, it'd sound the same in stereo, only... stereo. That, on the other hand, is a useful bit of trivia. :D

    mixing metal

I can't hear on this computer, but I've developed a juicy trick for bandaging sucky, shrill, solid state beetone guitars. Multiband compression! Cut the signal into the usual guitar freqs, bass (>500), mid (up to 1000), high (2000-2500), presence (whatever's left). I usually crush the mids...

need HELP with live on-site recording

I think the 58's are hurting you. They are not sensitive enough, that causes you to crank the gain, building up 10-15 channels of hiss. Get omnidirectional condensors, and things should improve in a hurry. You'd probably be able to use fewer as well.

    Anyone use one of these?

The short answer: A master volume knob reduces the signal sent to the power section. Adding a volume knob in the effects loop duplicates the master volume function. It will behave exactly as a master volume does, with the exact same benefits and downfalls, because it is exactly the same thing...

New to miking drums, I have some, what else is needed?

Exactly like that, except in mics without battery compartments.

New to miking drums, I have some, what else is needed?

Really? I thought it was because it provided power without an additional cable. "WHERE IS TEH ELECTRICITY COMING FROM? WHAT MANNER OF WITCHERY IS THIS?"

    ADA MP-1 vs. Digitech RP-3/5/6/7/20

They're both pretty British, but some external EQ can do a lot to a preamp. I'm sure the Tonebone will clean up, the ADA can run totally (near acoustic, think JC120) clean.

New to miking drums, I have some, what else is needed?

Overheads: try the Rodes, google "recorderman." Phantom power: just turn the phantom on. Phantom power won't hurt anything except for some rare ribbon mics you'll not likely encounter. Turn off phantom before plugging in or unplugging anything, "hot plugging" can damage some mics.. Snare: 57...

    ADA MP-1 vs. Digitech RP-3/5/6/7/20

For your purposes, I like the ADA. I've owned one or two for about twenty years. It is a good sounding hot-rodded Marshally thing, with good cleans, but you'll need a separate switcher, which you're OK with. Digitech has never made a remotely good-sounding preamp (some of the effects are good...

    Guitar Factory Burns...

In a follow up story: "Gibson's QC department looked over the pile of ashen splinters and charred hardware, and determined that none of the damage was sufficient to prevent on-time shipping of the affected instruments."

Finding the "sweet spot" for micing technique?

I've seen reference to the technique as a way to eliminate phase cancellation on a two-mic set-up. Place mic one (usually close), get a sound. Place mic two (usually farther back) and get a sound. Flip the phase on one mic. Remove guitar player from the building. Plug in guitar, generate hum...

    Physical limits of drummers?

Re-read his post. He has paid to play in front of 1000 seat venues. That's certainly more than I can say.

Not sure how to describe this...

It's easy to make such as pedal. By the time you've bought the enclosure, switch, jacks, pot and a knob, you're half-way to just buying one though. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001NXDSJS

    drum overhead stand suggestions

Quiklok has a nice looking stand, the A-85. Under $100, with a long boom w/ counter-weight, and it folds for storage. Probably not quite as stable as the heavier fixed-base modles, but much more stashable/stowable.

Difference between solid state and tube

One thing that has been mentioned, but not amplified sufficiently (pun intended) IMO is the difference in "feel." Solid state and emulator amps can sound very good, and are getting to the point where they can fool even an educated ear on a recording or live. However, the way a tube amp...
