Having a mic going into a sound card with no preamp sounds like ass. You need a preamp! I'd get an M-audio Audio Buddy. Yes it would be an improvement but it's not going to magically make your mic sound amazing.
And you'd say the sm81's are a lot better than the octava's or the marshals? Worth the price of admission?
With a pair of sm81's, a neuman tlm103, a sennheiser 411, a couple of shure sm57's and a nice multpattern LD condensor, (maybe a studio projects c3? I dunno whats a good multipattern LD...
The studio mp isn't BAD, i had some serious problems with noise until i switched the electrical plugs around, etc. I seem to have to drive it REALLY hard to get any decent levels out of my shure sm58. And the preamp is dark, and so is the sm58, so it's a bad combo! But it has it's uses, i...
richard would you recomend those for a very nice instrument stereo pair and over heads? What would you say is better? The neumann km184's and stuff from earthworks?
How much would you have to spend to take a step above the shure's?
I've been looking at the km183-185. Isn't it a pain that you have to buy a new mic for each pattern?
Which one is the most all around useful? The cardiode?
Richard i didn't mean you were being a snob. I meant gear snobbery is everywhere in the world of audio recording. This world is gear snobbery. No i understand that the c1000 isn't as good as other mics and you wouldn't say that out of any sort of gear snobbishness.
Yea you can always drive the 12ax7 tube with the tube blend thing for a bit more warmth, i figure it can't be much worse than an ART for bass DI and it's a hulluva lot better for everything else.
I've heard it does a decent job. I've been told the only real use for my ART is bass DI though. So what do you want a good multi purpose, clean preamp, or a bass di?
Yea, VTB-1 will be leaps and bounds ahead of the ART. I have the ART and it's not so good. When you have the money you can step up from the VTB-1 to an RNP, grace 101 or john hardy/great river.
Ah good times being a broke gear slut.
Hmmm those apogee converters look nice... I should probably...
I've heard the Neumann tlm103 compared to the NTK, would the TLM103 suffer the same sibilance problems? So what would you classify these two mics as? Bright? So you're saying a neutral mic would be a little better because it wouldn't have as much of a high frequency boost as the bright mics...
Geekgurl what do you play on? Did you learn on a piano or a keyboard? I have no piano so i'd like to get a keyboard to learn on, just looking for some additional input. thanks.
Who is this bill character and what company will he be releasing these monitors through?
Good discussion so far. I'm still on the monitor searching bandwagon (waiting for money to build up, but semi settle on yorkville monitors). These ones made by "Bill" sound interesting, especially at...
It's not bad, but it would be a lot better if he wasn't trying to sound all thugged out and cool to boost his record sales. It's all marketing, that's the difference between underground and mainstream. It's not the popularity it's the style of music.
But i will admit those are a lot better...
Ah that's good to know. so the question is will the extra 5 hz of bass extension really be worth the price of the sub? I understand it will give you more bass, but we don't want more bass do we, we want accurate bass!
