Na the yorkvilles are awesome. Sounds like the guy doesn't know his shit, or at least he hasn't heard them and he's going by stuff he's heard.
Monitors should be accurate and as flat as possible. You probably want a set that don't fatigue your ears so that you can mix for longer periods of...
Shaking walls tend to come from bass. And the 6.5 inch drivers in these units will definatly not do that.
i think you might have to step up to something like a Mackie HR824 or Blue Sky system one, or KRK V8 or something with an 8 inch driver, or sub to produce significant bass.

a mixer for close micing?
Could you please elaborate?
Do you mean you need a mixer for multiple preamps, so that you can power multiple mics, for micing multiple parts of a drum kit? The proximity of the mic wouldn't have any effect whether you use a mixer or not... Stand alone preamps would...

You ship to Canada? How would that work... And even though they aren't matched they'd still sound great for doing stereo recordings wouldn't they? How much would these cost new now a days?
they're pretty much fricken identicle converter wise, except that the 1010 has the converters in the breakout box, and are supposudly better.
Just figure out how many inputs/outputs you need and then buy, no real controversy from within a brand like this.
