Should I be able to get a "decent" vocal track out of this...

I have a Shure SM-58, Bellairi (? - $100) single channel tube pre-amp and a two channel compressor. (It's the one that's blue and has a rotary knob for presets, vocals, percs, strings, guitars, etc... around $150) Should I be able to get a decent vocal track out of this? If so, then I have...

    Skipping/jumping during recording/playback

The de-frag did it. Thanks for offering help. :D Another trick that worked was zooming out to prevent the need for re-reshing the screen. Between the two, It record flawlessly now. :)

    Skipping/jumping during recording/playback

I'm running CW9 on a ~500MHz PII. The 8gig hard drive is about 45% full. Wneh recording the first track (drums) everything is fine. Then, while recording susequent tracks, it begins to jump and skip. The more tracks are added, the worse/mor frequent it gets. I will be defragging tomorrow...

    4-track fostex as mixer??

Yeah, it will work, sort of. That's how I'm recording drums now, but the problem is that you have to get all the eq, balance and relative levels perfect before you actually record. I thought it all sounded pretty good, until I put some guitar and bass over it. The bass drum was EQ'ed way...

What makes a mix sound "glossy" or "slick" or "pop"?

LOL... I'm not looking to really make the recordings sound "boy band-ish" I'm just wondering what will bring them to the next level, i.e. sounding semi-pro instead of amateur. ;)

Improving the sound of vocals (sounding more like radio bands)

Thanks for the comments. Let's see... I played rhythm, lead and bass for the track, since we wrote it and recorded it that night. It was done on a cheap 4 track and I really had no idea how the mix would turn out. SO: When we record for real, we have a solid drummer, that should help the...

Improving the sound of vocals (sounding more like radio bands)

On the track my band recorded, the vocals sound like they are not a part of the mix. Other than backing them off and encouraging the singer to stay in tune ;) what else can be done? We will be recording this week at my house and I'd like to be able to have his vocals blend really well like...

What makes a mix sound "glossy" or "slick" or "pop"?

What gives a mix that glossified sound? Is it heavy compression across the tracks? I'm recording my rock/punk band on Cakewalk over the next few days, and when I mix down, I'd like to give it a sheen instead of the typical raw demo sound. Any suggestions? For example, what's the difference...
