You really need to have a test tape. I'd watch eBay for a used one manufactured not long ago, or just pony up the dough for a new one. I spent $140 on the 4-minute 4-tone 1/2" 15 ips tape and it's been well worth it to me.

Is it normal for the edge tracks to have more bass response than the inside tracks? I was calibrating for the first time last night and I noticed the 100 Hz tone was about 1 to 1.5 dB down on the inside tracks compared to the outside tracks, and I was unable to raise it with the trim pots.

There aren't very many out there that don't have preamps. The M-Audio Delta 1010 doesn't have preamps and is a pretty decent unit. It's 8 channels instead of four, but good luck finding a four-channel rackmount interface. Such a thing may not exist...

The analog machine (a Tascam ATR-60-8) doesn't. Dunno about the Fireface. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it, I guess.
