I have a real big problem with the idea that music can make anybody behave a certain way. Popular music can't induce anybody to commit any kind of antisocial acts they weren't going to commit anyway. Or do you suppose that Charles Manson wouldn't have done the things he did if the Beatles...
Of Montreal recorded a song for Outback Steakhouse? Jeez, I'm glad I didn't bother trying to see them at the Pitchfork festival this summer.
Anyway, what I meant to say is that there are a lot of really good artists (in rap or in any genre) who are busting their asses and making great music...
Uh...do you actually listen to any rap? There is a lot more to the genre than the MTV stuff, you know.
Also, Beck, do you contend that digital is always a poor-sounding medium? I've heard plenty of digital recordings that I think sound fantastic.

Well, I got the M320. It's huge. It was dirty as hell when I first got it, and full of crackles, but a thorough scrubbing took care of the dirt and an entire can of contact cleaner got rid of the worst of the crackles. I just did a very basic, limited shootout between one of the...
Alnicos sound different than ceramics--mellower and not as sharp. I am in the process of selling a cab (component by component) that had two Greenbacks and two of the Eminence alnico Red Fangs. It sounded good, and downright amazing for cleans and tones with just a little breakup, but I...
Oh for pete's sake, just post the covers. Nobody in a million years is going to come after you for posting a cover of a song from 1952 on a recording geek message board.
Hello old thread! Didn't expect to see this still active. Since I've posted this I've made some discoveries of my own. I find that when I do the transformerless mod on the SM57, the sound opens up and more closely resembles my Beta 56s. On snare, I really like the sound of a regular 57 on...
That is very cool...so that means I should be able to have six discrete balanced outputs. That's six of the eight inputs of my ATR-60 covered!
The reason I'm concerned is of course because the direct outs on the M320 are unbalanced, and although that'll be fine for the Fireface, my ATR-60...
I'll probably find this out myself soon enough, but for those of you who are familiar with the routing capabilities of the 300 series, is it possible to route signals to one of the group outs but not the main stereo outs, and/or vice versa?
There's a guy in my area who has been trying to sell an M320 (not the 'B' version, to my knowledge) for a while. Just emailed him and he's looking for $300 for it. Is this worth it? Currently I just have an Alesis Studio 24, and I would like to step up what's in my arsenal as far as preamps...
Is there a similar rule of thumb for 499? I have a reel of 499 that is not in the original box but it is also sealed and the label on the reel is the style of the 456 in the auction. Is 499 even at risk for sticky shed?
Oh phew, I also have a reel of 456 still in the sealed plastic just like that, but I just went and checked and the logo is along the bottom of the box. That's a relief.
The G9? That must have been what I borrowed off a friend...he knows a guy who likes to build audio gear, and he loaned me a couple of the guy's homemade preamps including the G9. I thought it sounded big and full in the mids with a pleasing air in the highs.
Dude, it is easy to hear differences between preamps, even without a mix being involved. When I listen to a recording of the same material--just one channel's worth--recorded through my VTB-1 and my Eureka, I have no problem hearing which is the higher-quality pre.
I'm a bit confused...are you using the mixer's built-in preamps, or external preamps into the patch bay? And is the purpose of the patchbay basically for greater ease of patching in external compressors?
I have the Studio 24 and yes, the line and the mic inputs both go through the gain stage...
The other thing about the Eureka is that the 'saturate' feature basically sucks. I suppose maybe somebody somewhere could find it useful for something, but I did some comparisons between it all the way up versus all the way down, and cranking it seems to remove detail and make the sound less...
I can't see that an unbalanced line in a balanced patchbay would cause you problems. I think you'd want to have a balanced one no matter what, because an unbalanced one anywhere in the chain would pretty much nix any benefit you'd get from using balanced lines in the first place
