    chicago area technicians?

I'm not positive they do r2r stuff, but you may want to try Specimen. I've had some work done there and they seem like good people. Apparently Andrew Bird has all of his work done there.

    16 tracks 2 inch tape?

If you have a Digi 002, you would need to acquire an 8 channel A/D converter with an ADAT Lightpipe output. You could connect that to the Lightpipe in on the 002 and have your 16 channels.

Transformer Balanced or Electronically Balanced Preamp?

So what does 'transformer-coupled' mean? My Eureka says it's transformer-coupled. Is that some way to cheat and get a transformer in the design without, I don't know, doing it the proper way?

    16 tracks 2 inch tape?

The only tape format I've ever heard of for the ATR-60/16 is 1".

Good price on a Shure SM7A

Just bought one of those myself for $275 without the extras, and even then I was satisfied with the price! Awesome mic.

    Preamp A vs Preamp B - Discuss.

This was an interesting comparison but wouldn't it be a lot more informative when heard in the context of a mix? What makes one preamp sound nicer than another in a solo context might be just the thing that makes it work wrong in a mix.

Here is a comparison between the MXL V69M and the Shure SM7 on vocal

    Oh yeah...forgot about that.

Here is a comparison between the MXL V69M and the Shure SM7 on vocal

As a renter, I unfortunately have no choice but to deal with my bad room(s). I agree about the SM7--better on my voice. Can't wait to try it on some instruments!

Here is a comparison between the MXL V69M and the Shure SM7 on vocal

It was no amazing deal or anything--$275, and I only had to walk a few blocks away to get it. I was happy to pay that much for a mic this nice.

Here is a comparison between the MXL V69M and the Shure SM7 on vocal

This morning I scored myself an SM7 on Craigslist. I had been wanting a large diaphragm dynamic and was more leaning towards the EV RE20 or the Heil PR40, but then this Shure appeared on the used market, and I just had to go for it. As a test, I recorded a new vocal track on a demo of mine...

Please Help: Connecting Neutrik Patchbay to AW16G!!

Take a look at this: http://cachepe.zzounds.com/media/210_11538-ff30a40dbd6ee27e4db472392c6e3d67.pdf You should be able to configure the behavior of each set of jacks (1-24) by flipping a card inside. The 'split' mode may be of most interest to you--it will allow you to connect an input on the...

    MXL V69M vs. Apex 460

I have the V69M and the CAD M37, which is the same mic as the M177 but in a different housing. I like them both...the V69 has a somewhat more interesting and 'colored' sound. I like the M37 more for instrument and background vocal miking, and I like the V69 for lead vocals and acoustic...

    high frequency roll-off on RTR?

Ah, I didn't understand it was level rather than frequency. Same principle though.

    high frequency roll-off on RTR?

The bias frequency is different for +6 and +9 tapes. If your bias is set for one, the other one will sound wrong. No way around this that I know of.

    Tube Valve mic pre's

Low end 'tube' preamps are noisy and lack high-end detail. In that price range you are much better with a decent starter solid-state preamp such as the DMP3. Try not to get hung up on whether the device has a tube or not--you have to spend a good deal more money to get a tube mic preamp that...

Where is your console in the signal chain?

In my old studio setup I used the preamps first on my Yamaha MX12/4, then on my Alesis Studio 24, into my M-Audio Delta cards. In my forthcoming studio setup (still in progress), I'll be using my Tascam M320 board's pres into my Tascam ATR-60 tape machine and the RME Fireface 800 I'll be buying...

Holy crap, Sennheiser e602 on floor tom!

I think you might be thinking of the e609. The e602 is front-address and I don't think there is a silver version of that one. I have the black e609 too but I've never tried it on toms.

Holy crap, Sennheiser e602 on floor tom!

I finally got around to getting those files, so here's a clip: http://www.genitalhercules.com/~mcrowe/e602floortom.mp3 Note: I am a terrible drummer even when I'm in practice, and I'm waaaaay out of practice, so please excuse the playing. When you hear me say 'dammit' in the beginning that's...

Holy crap, Sennheiser e602 on floor tom!

I don't have the recordings handy because they are at my rehearsal space. Next time I go, I will make sure to put them on a disc and bring them back home so I can post them. I need to check them on my monitors I use at home anyway.

Holy crap, Sennheiser e602 on floor tom!

In 2001 or so I bought a Sennheiser e602 to use mainly as a kick drum mic. I did plenty of recordings with it, but whenever I compared it to a Shure Beta 52 I realized I liked the Shure a lot better. I've been using a borrowed one of those for a while now, and the Sennheiser has been sitting...
