CLIPS: MXL603s vs. Peluso CEM-C6s on drum overheads

I also hear a thinness in the MXLs in the cymbal region. The cymbals sound more natural to me through the Pelusos.

CLIPS: MXL603s vs. Peluso CEM-C6s on drum overheads

Finally got around to putting these up: http://www.genitalhercules.com/~mcrowe/drum_tests/PelusosWideUnmixed.mp3 http://www.genitalhercules.com/~mcrowe/drum_tests/MXLsWideUnmixed.mp3 http://www.genitalhercules.com/~mcrowe/drum_tests/PelusosXYUnmixed.mp3...

Planning on AT4047 and AT4050 for my next mic purchases; thoughts?

I'm in the middle of making a bunch of all-around upgrades to my recording equipment. First step was to pick up an old Tascam M320 board (the preamps and EQ are a step up from what I had been using, and are quite decent imo). Next I ditched my M-Audio Delta cards and started using the RME...

CLIPS: MXL603s vs. Peluso CEM-C6s on drum overheads

Haha, well, the day after I recorded these, I accidentally deleted the partition that contained the original recordings. I've made some new ones though. Later on I can post the unmixed versions of those.

Better to leave external hard drives on, or switch on only when in use?

I see. Sounds less cut-and-dried than I was originally thinking. I am actually pretty sure my enclosure doesn't spin down the disk when not in use, actually. This is the one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817193027 I have a WD 500 GB drive in it.

    Drum overheads

I feel I should follow up on my earlier comments...the other night I took my mic case over to a friend's house to play with some homebrew preamps a friend of his had built, and we did tests with a single Peluso pointed at his drum kit, followed by a single MXL603. The increased fullness of the...

Better to leave external hard drives on, or switch on only when in use?

Now that I've added a laptop to my recording setup, I've decided to start using an external Firewire drive as my primary recording target (the idea is I'll be sure to keep copies of everything on that drive on an internal drive in my desktop as well). I have a Firewire chain with my Fireface...

    Drum overheads

I recently picked up a pair of Peluso CEMC6s for just over $500 (they were used...the eBay transaction was a nightmare and they don't cost much more brand new, so I would probably spend the extra money if I had it to do again). They are high-quality American-made mics, and I'm definitely happy...

Why can I get much lower latencies on my desktop than my laptop?

According to the vendor string it's a Ricoh chipset.

Why can I get much lower latencies on my desktop than my laptop?

Bah, when I said ms, I meant samples, so 96 samples (~3-4 ms) on the desktop versus (as of my tests just now) 512 samples (~14-15 ms I think) on the laptop. The Firewire on the laptop is built in; not sure what chipset it uses.

Why can I get much lower latencies on my desktop than my laptop?

I have two PCs: a desktop with a 1.8 Ghz Core 2 Duo used mainly for mixing, and a laptop with a 2 Ghz Turion X2 used mainly for tracking (I live in an apartment so I have to go to our rehearsal space to track loud stuff). I have them both running Windows XP SP2 with all the necessary updates...

CLIPS: MXL603s vs. Peluso CEM-C6s on drum overheads

On Monday I finally got the Peluso CEM-C6s I had won on eBay, so I headed down to the rehearsal space on Tuesday to do some clips comparing them to my MXL603s. My setup was as follows: MXL603s or CEM-C6s overhead, wide-spaced or XY Modded (TapeOp/no transformer mod) SM57 on snare top Stock...

Vista: turn down the gay and use it, or downgrade to XP?

I figured as much but I just wanted it confirmed. Now to find drivers!

Vista: turn down the gay and use it, or downgrade to XP?

Just got a new laptop that I'll be using for mobile tracking. I'll probably stick with mixing on my desktop PC. Of course, Vista came preloaded. Based on my first half-hour's experiences, I'd say it looks pretty, but seems to run needlessly slow. However I've heard you can dial down the...

Duuuuude...my tape got totally baked last night

According to my pa, it was all splices. He says the sections that have a long decay were assembled by finding a tiny section of tape for the basic sound (like say 1/4" of tape) and dubbing it over and over and over and over, then taking those little segments and splicing them all together. I...

It's a big download, but if you're interested: www.genitalhercules.com/~mcrowe/PIM.wav The name of the piece is Poultry In Motion. All of the sound source material was made from sampling a little wind-up bird toy.

Duuuuude...my tape got totally baked last night

I have successfully baked and transferred my first tape! This is something I had been wanting to do for a very long time, but I'm glad I wasn't able to try it until now, since that gave me a lot of time to do the necessary research. I got most of my information from this link. The tape in...
