    custom mic cases?

I went to Home Depot and bought a Husky aluminum toolbox (looks exactly like the cases most mics ship in) and then went across the street to Jo-Ann Fabrics and bought some foam, made some nice cutouts, and now I have a case that holds both my SDC pairs, my Beta 56s, my SM7, and my MD421. Total...

Glitches in audio playback on my laptop through Firewire bus

Good info...thanks! I don't have time to start running RATTV3 right now, but looking around on the net has given me an idea of how to interpret the logs when I do run it.

Glitches in audio playback on my laptop through Firewire bus

Yeah, I think you're right...I've never used it before but I guess it's time to learn. Even with the ultra-streamlined Windows XP install with no drivers installed yet, the spike occurs every 15 seconds. I hope this machine doesn't turn out to be unsuitable for audio work...

Glitches in audio playback on my laptop through Firewire bus

I was trying to see if anything spiked in Process Explorer (which has more robust analysis of running processes than Task Manager) but it wasn't. I booted into my Vista partition to see if I got the same spike every 15 seconds, and I did, which makes me think it's a hardware issue. I am...

Glitches in audio playback on my laptop through Firewire bus

Found a tool that was very helpful in nailing down part of the cause of the problem: http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml On my machine, disabling the onboard audio and wireless card via Device Manager had the most significant effect in lowering my overall latency. I am still getting...

Glitches in audio playback on my laptop through Firewire bus

I have a laptop and a desktop, and I use the same 500 GB external hard drive and Fireface 800 audio interface with both. Both machines also use the same OS (Windows XP Pro) set up in basically the same way. On my desktop, I use an aftermarket Firewire PCI card with (I think) a TI chipset, and...

Preamp comparison clips: Tascam M-series and Focusrite ISA428

I agree, and this makes me think that I should avoid using the Tascam pres for any sound source that could conceivably get harsh (drum OHs, guitar amps, etc).

Preamp comparison clips: Tascam M-series and Focusrite ISA428

I like the tone I get out my kick drum when the 421 is in it, but it seems too puny on the low end to be a useful kick drum mic. Unfortunately I'm finding that I have the same opinion of the SM7...

Preamp comparison clips: Tascam M-series and Focusrite ISA428

Nope, Focusrite's outputs went directly into the line inputs on my RME Fireface 800 (forgot to mention that was the DAW front end used here).

Preamp comparison clips: Tascam M-series and Focusrite ISA428

Give that a shot if you like...I embarrassed myself that way once by listening to some samples somebody made of an electric bass, plugged straight into a preamp, recorded once at 44.1 kHz and once at 192 kHz. I couldn't hear a difference, so I stitched the takes together in an attempt to prove...

Preamp comparison clips: Tascam M-series and Focusrite ISA428

OK, gonna reveal the answer here, so stop reading this post if you still want to take a guess... ... ...aaaand clip #1 is indeed the Focusrites. The difference can be hard to hear right away, but you should be able to hear a little more...

    Fixed now...sorry about that.

Preamp comparison clips: Tascam M-series and Focusrite ISA428

I just got the Focusrite ISA428, and I decided to make a test recording to see how they performed. I have here two clips of drums (the drumming is pretty bad so forgive me): www.genitalhercules.com/~mcrowe/drum_tests/clip1.mp3 www.genitalhercules.com/~mcrowe/drum_tests/clip2.mp3 The mics on...

Power trio to 8 tracks of tape: how would you lay it out?

Reel, I think my idea is basically the same as yours, except I need to use two tracks for guitar to keep the ability to have stereo down the road, I don't plan on doing vocals to tape, and the floor tom gets its own track simply because it's left over.

Fireface 800 and Reaper for me.

Power trio to 8 tracks of tape: how would you lay it out?

Hadn't yet considered synchronization...that is a can of worms I may or may not be ready to get into at this time. I have done a lot of experimentation with different drum miking configurations and I find that for the sound I want to get and the style I work in, I always want close tom mics, no...

Power trio to 8 tracks of tape: how would you lay it out?

In the future, when I do my next serious recording of my band, I would like to record the basic tracks to my Tascam ATR-60, then move that material over to my DAW to overdub stuff like keyboards and vocals. The basic tracks would probably be a basic power trio setup. I like to mic drums with a...

    Drum Overhead suggestions...

You can definitely make a decent recording with the MXL603s as overhead mics; I've made lots. There is certainly room for improvement by getting nicer condensers, but the 603s are absolutely usable.

How can I get the most from my Tascam 38?

A demagnetizer is something you really should have if you are serious about analog recording at all. If you don't demagnetize the tape path on a regular basis, it is possible for residual magnetism to build up on the metal parts of the path, which slowly destroys the high frequencies on any...
