Who to trust? ears or ..

Fascinating thread. Over my head. But on the ear thing, I think I am hearing two separate effects: a hiss in some clips and a hum in others, depending on whether there is input. They sound to me as if their source may be different. I am agog here. Please continue.

    My Muffle Test for Vocals

EDIT: I should add that this is all singing PRACTICE (not pristine production!) in case anyone wonders wtf! You may think that the best way to test vocals is to listen to them at a comfortable volume. But I have discovered something else slightly counterintuitive.. How it works. 1. Record...

    Does this harmonize?

A very interesting point, but I don't think it means that anything can harmonize. For example, you can sing your Indian microtones perfectly alongside your Western scales, and it won't harmonize. For harmony, you need some overlap in the harmonics of simultaneous notes. It is very noticeable...

    Does this harmonize?

Yep. Seems very sensible. I can practice each way, but post something standard next time. Thanks folks. The exercise I was doing morphed into more than what I had originally intended. I sang one track (and my pitch consistency is + or - 2Hz, btw, which I checked with software), then I wondered...

    Does this harmonize?

Hi, thanks for listening and for your advice. So far, it's always been a cappella with no reference backing instrumentals, and I just start at a random pitch, which is generally between notes. I think that has many advantages when learning vocals. Of course the obvious downside is that you...

    Does this harmonize?

Thanks, Mack! Last time I tried something like this was a couple of years ago. It was one royal mess and I flat gave up. I am really glad I have made progress. I'm hoping to be ready to attempt full covers in a year or so.

    Does this harmonize?

Hi! Obviously not a clean recording by any stretch of the imagination, but it's only for practice. I'm kind of guessing, so can someone with a good ear for harmony tell me if this harmonizes and if the voices are balanced? Thanks! I may listen to this tomorrow and find it a complete mess...

    Feedback Please!

I've discovered what the problem was. Slight change in technique has fixed it (and a couple of other things as a bonus).

    Feedback Please!

Does this sound wobbly/uncontrolled (particularly the diphthongs)? (Yes, I have listened to it myself first, but the problem is that my opinion keeps changing!) https://soundcloud.com/kickingtone/ks132fep

    Natural or compress?

Seems kind of odd, to be honest, as you will probably have to adjust the gain manually afterwards, anyway. Maybe it is so that you can adjust all compressed tracks from a known position.

    Natural or compress?

Ha! It's beginning to make sense. I've just notices that the "compressor" function in Audacity, which I have played with in the past, has an option, "make up gain for 0db after compressing", which is on by default. Hadn't noticed it before, but it makes the compressor look as if it is doing...

    Natural or compress?

It's what I would normally do. Shouldn't a compressor do different things to different vowels, then? That is what is confusing me. So why does a compressor produce a trace that is visually even, or am I only talking cheapo compressors? Or maybe I have completely misunderstood the idea of a...

    Natural or compress?

oops! You nailed it. Thanks for the tip. Ok. I guess I need more dynamic, not less.

    Natural or compress?

When I sing -oo- -ih- or -ee- vowels they tend to be quieter than -aa- -ah- -oh- -ow- vowels. Same thing with speech, except that it is more pronounced when singing. So, what do you tend to do? Leave it, because it is natural? Use compression? Learn to compensate and sing your quieter vowels...

    Tips on vocal technique (cover)

"Breath support" is the basic singing technique whereby you produce high air pressure, but controlled, low airflow. That's just part of the training, and there are countless online articles and videos about it (often conflicting and dependent on genre). The higher tones you wish to produce, the...

Practice - to reverb or not to reverb?

With a trace of reverb https://soundcloud.com/kickingtone/whstml0090 "Raw" https://soundcloud.com/kickingtone/whstml0091 When you practice songs or parts of songs, do you listen back to a processed version of your voice (e.g with reverb) or to your "raw" vocals? If, both, which do pay more...

    Tips on vocal technique (cover)

An acappella version would be better for assessing technique. From what I can hear, pitch and timing seem to be fine. On the other hand, you seem to be pushing your speaking voice instead of accessing your singing voice. An acappella version would clarify that.

My First, My Favourite and An Experiment!

You have removed your "experiment" cover. Don't be put off by negative comments. The helpful comments will come in time. Whether your voice is suited to rock or not, what you learn from experiments and entering new ground will enhance your singing across the board (cross-fertilization). Which...

    Removing artifacts produced by software

I think that you should take a bit more care with your descriptions. I am guessing that the "creation of sound file stage" refers to the input file (before transformation), not the output file (after transformation). And "the software" you say is the source of the artifacts refers just to the...
