    The "I can't sing" people!

:p You wouldn't get to audition him, either. But seriously, the point I was trying to make is that the drummer couldn't relate in the same way to "beats per bar" of whatever, regardless of whether it was written down. Three beats to the bar, four beats to the bar, twice as fast? Those questions...

    The "I can't sing" people!

What you may have observed is a trend, rather than a fact. I am not sure the value of the observation, given that a song is never two notes. If they can sing the ten notes back, that is what matters. There are reasons why 10 may be easier than 2 that are not to do with "better musical ear". For...

    The "I can't sing" people!

On the contrary. They ARE different notes. They ARE different notes which happen to have the same fundamental frequency. The fundamental frequency does not DEFINE the sound, the feel, or anything musical about the sound (I mean it is not a musical DEFINITION of a note). It is only one aspect of...

    The "I can't sing" people!

I know I would struggle, but I don't think that I lack a musical ear, particularly. Two isolated notes could be a challenge for me. Ten notes of a melody probably would not, even if they contained those two notes Somehow, once I feel the context and melody, the notes slip into place. Sometimes...

    The "I can't sing" people!

Ha! I love this question, human psychology and all that. First of all, I can't tell you how many times having a slightly higher opinion of my own abilities than I actually possess has helped me in life. Sure, life slaps a reality check in my face every so often, but I get to challenge myself in...

Another smaller difference is that skill level of singing is a lot more subjective. You'll get a much better consensus about your skill level at playing guitar. So "can/can't play the guitar" makes more sense than "can/can't sing". But both are still meaningless. :D

    The "I can't sing" people!

tbh, I think this can/can't false dichotomy is a big part of the problem. Why is singing different in this respect? Is that how it works with playing the guitar? You're seven and mum shows you off to her friend down the road..."Look! My Johnny plays the guitar so nicely"...."oh, yes!....doesn't...

    The "I can't sing" people!

Supposedly, we are pretty much all born breathing correctly for singing, breathing from the diaphragm. Most of us exercise that ability as children as we play, compete and shout -- some children ..... more than others ..... Then we generally get to being less noisy and may lose touch with...

    The "I can't sing" people!

If you have never heard of "breath support" or never tried to apply breath support in singing, then you simply don't know whether or not you "can sing". You basically have never tried. Breath support is so fundamental to singing, it can totally flip your assessment of whether or not you "can...

You haven't met my family. I'd have to be a masochist to ask them what they think. In my experience you have to strike a balance between taking advice and being stubborn. Both are necessary, but must not extend to denial. If you simply get cowed by numbers of people saying one thing, it...

Caught the tail end of it! ;) I tell you, some of the folk wished they were trying to take chunks out of a rhino, instead. I came here baked solid from experience on other forums! Actually, it goes way back. By time I was 12, I was practically built of mahogany.

I think that singers or people learning to sing tend to be labelled as prima donnas. It kind of takes off from there. There are people whose instinctive reaction is to "put you in your place". That's is the primary reason why you need a thick skin. Take me, for example. You could bruise a rhino...

Very frustrating. There is already a cultural barrier between singer and producer. There is so much really interesting stuff to discuss about vocal technique. I can't figure out why the topic never seems to take off. I see the sense in hiving off the "can I sing threads", but why is there such...

It is also about vocal technique, though. So, it would appear to me that technical threads about vocal methodology can go here. For that, you don't need a quality or finished product, at all. I guess it is the same for any instrument. You can hear and advise on technique from pretty average...

    Objective opinions on my singing

I mean that I would have expected the level of lack of breath support you are using would require some form of pitch correction processing afterwards, for it to stay on pitch. And, well, I don't count my opinions as "objective". They are just opinions, like everybody else's.

    Objective opinions on my singing

I don't know what "objective opinion" is, only subjective opinion. So... Sounds like something funny is going on. The way you are singing with hardly any support to your breath, I am surprised that you stay on pitch like that... So, what are you up to? :)

Sorry, another how can I improve thread.

Had a listen to 4 or 5 of your clips just now. Good, round, balanced tone, imo. It carries the right vibe for the songs you are singing. I particularly liked "Why Worry". I think that something to work on would be the higher notes. I can hear a slight faltering on those notes, and your tone...

    Honest vocal critique

I don't know the song, so I had a quick Youtube of the original. Funny thing is that I prefer the way you were singing it, over the original. But then the type of sound is not really my kind of thing. All that vocal fry in the original...I couldn't listen for more than 30 seconds. Kills it for...

    Does this harmonize -- follow-up.

I forgot to post this follow-up to my "Does this harmonize?" thread. My problem is that I can't recognize chords or anything. In fact, I can't reliably recognize notes, even if you gave me a reference. (I am getting better with the notes). So I am going to have to put a heap of time aside to...
