iPhone recording for audio book reading

I have used Reaper, by Cockos, for the past 8 years. It is free to try for 60-days, then $60.00 to buy. Reaper is a full, professional-level digital audio workstation (DAW). It has a steep learning curve. If you are starting out, I would recommend Audacity (free). If you get the hang of...

iPhone recording for audio book reading

You caught me... I knew there is a MotU M2 interface... I got stuck on the phone idea when you mentioned trying to do this on the iPhone, and thought you were considering the new Motorola Moto M2 that is set to release. Okay- that aside: all of the gear that you are considering; SM7B, CL, X2...

iPhone recording for audio book reading

First question: isn't a Moto M2 a smartphone? Second question: what recording software are you planning to use to record, edit and export your audio? It appears you have researched the SM7B, and seem to realize it needs lots of clean gain (CL-1). I inferred that you also realized the CL-1...

Copyright laws for using sound bites

I'm a little late to the party.... But if you are just looking for any,old newsreel clip, you might grab one from Archive.org. I know many of the audiobook recordings are pre-1923 and public domain. I cannot confirm the same for the Newsreels. The few that I clicked had Public Domain usage...

    Beware this app!

Dave, I did battle with a nasty rootkit on my daughters laptop, a while back. I researched and found RKill from BleepingComputer. Look at it ... It may be an option. Dale

The special name for the vocal intro that doesn't appear anywhere else in the song

Maybe a "Slate" ? I've done this for VO auditions. Not sure it is commonly called that for songs and tend to agree with the Intro/prelude suggestions. Dale

    Mastering on reaper

Mark, I've had good luck with the ReaComp and the Master Limiter that are built-ins. However, initially, it took me learning what the compressor does and how it works, to get any good out of it. Believe me when I say that I have butchered a lot of audio tracks, during my learning phase. CTRL + Z...

    Mastering on reaper

I think this is what you are referencing.... On mine, the outer bars are RMS, the inner bars are track(s) Peak. I reset my display offset to align -18 to 0. I think default was -14 to 0.

    Static In My Signal Chain

Ray, It appears that the 3.5mm adapter has the inferior, non-conductive, thermoplastic covering material. That material has been known to ionize, which allows the electrons to leak. You may want to look for some 3/0 AWG UGF cable to replace that connector. That will definitely silence your...

    Mixer or Interface or Both?

It appears you already know how to set up a mix-minus system with Skype. Your questions were "Loopback?", need a "mixer?", "Aux/FX/headphone out?" A fellow VO artist wrote a blog a few years back about setting up a mix-minus system for remote VO direction and recording in his DAW. He talks...

USB audio interface with built-in hardware Gate/EQ/Compressor/Limiter

Channel strip.. [not USB] Symetrix 528-E or DBX 286-S... These still need an audio interface to PC. I have the 528e, a couple of older 286A-s, and an old Joe Meek VC-3Q, which lacks the gate you mentioned. I had a Behringer Composer Pro XL (lacks your EQ request) many years ago. It was entirely...

Solved [Voiceover/acting] Upgrading from beginner set. Audient iD22 + interface questions...

Chaos, I have been very pleased with my iD22. I will tell on myself: the first time I fired it up and got it dialed in, I was pissed and thinking I was dealt a dud. It was so electronically quiet that I thought it dead on arrival. It made me realize how noisy my previous AI was and interjecting...

Solved [Voiceover/acting] Upgrading from beginner set. Audient iD22 + interface questions...

Chaos, You will not need a separate interface, like you did with the 286s. The iD22 has USB to your DAW and is a turnkey audio interface. It has ASIO drivers and a software mixer application to configure Ins/Outs. That was a bit horsey to adjust, because the owners manual is not much help. Once...

Solved [Voiceover/acting] Upgrading from beginner set. Audient iD22 + interface questions...

Chaos, My rig is a Symetrix 528e to iD22. I can bypass the pres, on the iD22 via insert. The iD14 does not have that option. Because I am too pragmatic, I use the pres on the 528e, even though the pre on the Audient is quite good. I just choose to let the Audient be a converter. I do not...

Based on Feedback - Got 2 Mics to Remove Background Noise - feedback Required

Cat, You can do punch-n-roll, in Audacity. One of my fellow audiobook narrators recently created a how-to video: YouTube Since you are familiar with Audacity, you can continue to use it and not add to your learning curve, until you get your sound sorted. Dale
