How do I get a professional sound at home?

This is true. The only way you are going to get a good sound is to get good equipment. The sound you have got through your Radio Shack mic may have sounded good to you, but go get even a cheaper condenser mike, like a Rhode or an Oktava and believe me, you'll never look back...

    Explaining compressor settings...would this help?

Ok, am I nuts? All I get is about the first quarter of the pic. I've refreshed, CTRL refreshed, ALT Refreshed, SHIFT refeshed and that's all I get... I take it everyone else can see it fine?

    Is "Stereo" just "panning"?

Another thought is that we may be mixing 2 different lingo's here. On one hand, you have a single guitar that has stereo effects, and on the other hand, you have 2 guitar tracks panned left and right. Are they both Stereo? Yes, but they are both Stereo in 2 different ways. So we are thinking...

    Recording setup help!

You can always post a new thread here about it, I'm sure someone else has worked with it that isn't following this thread. I would feel much better finding someone who has worked with it to give reviews instead of going on second hand info. Best of luck! Feel free to ask more questions though :)

    Is "Stereo" just "panning"?

For all practical purposes, Stereo is not panning, but in essence it is in the fact that you are taking mono instruments (for the most part) and creating a stereo image of them. Take the drumset for example. You have toms panned left-center-right, your cymbals are panned left to right and what...

    Recording setup help!

I have not had any personal experience with them, but I have heard from many sources on this bbs that M Audio makes good stuff. I know the PCI version of the 2496 has had good reviews, but I am not too sure about the USB version. I would guess that it would probably be of equal quality.
