in the past 14 months, i've bought 3 akai r2rs and my teac a-6300 off of ebay. they were shipped to me, some from the west coast-a 3000 mile trip, and they all got to me with no problems. but if you can find what you want and buy it locally or thru CL, etc, (as noted above), and hopefully test...

if you just wanna record and/or listen to stereo tapes consider a teac A-6300 or A-3300sr (one on ebay as we 'speak'). either is built like a tank, simple to use, has auto-reverse, and most importantly, sounds really good. parts are also supposedly available for them.

i'm pretty sure that if there are inputs, the outputs will be there also. they usually come in sets.

nakamichi mr-1 tascam 122 series (my mkII and mkIII machines have xlrs. not sure about the others in the series) i'm sure there are others i don't know about.

jeeez, i almost hate to say this but last spring i ran out of deoxit, went down to the local RS; they had no deoxit so i got the precision elect. cleaner. 2 of my akai r2r decks were suffering from unstable speeds (on the same night even (!)) so i needed to clean out their speed control...

cleaned the pinch roller lately? whilst yer at it, do the heads and guides. with older tapes i find it necessary to clean after every tape play/pass to maintain peak performance. sometimes in the middle of a tape.

i have in my rack and occasionally use, an aphex exciter. it can also brighten things up a bit. i prefer not to use it tho unless absolutely necessary and in the very rare instances when i do i adjust it to it's lowest usable settings. i've never tried a bbe unit.

congrats! a side note-some folks with certain nakamichi cass. decks have had the same problem, the record-timer switch being left in the 'on' position. upon 'power-up' (and operator wanting to play a tape), the deck would go right into 'record' thereby sometimes erasing already recorded...
