    Reel-to-Reel Issue

can you describe the 'slides/hits' movement more clearly, please? ie, up, down, left, right? reel coming off of the spindle? ? is the tape threaded correctly? it's hard to picture what might be wrong from your description. is it possible to take a pic(s) of what's happening? ie-before and after?

Why does a glazed or hardened pinch roller cause trouble??

hi. if you're referring to my deleted post above, i only deleted it cuz i think the ops question had already been answered. my answer would have just been redundant. hence, my being 'late to the party'. edit-whilst we're here, i've used very fine grit sandpaper on at least one of my r2rs...

    Tips on recording with Dolby.

dolby is a 2-way process. it must be used when recording and then again on playback. otherwise it is useless. cleaning and demagnetizing heads and guides (and keeping them clean) is paramount to to good sounding tapes. sounds like your deck(s) need some maintanance work, calibration, etc...

Pre-recorded music reels: how good ? Your opinion please !

what everyone already said. with the addition that out of the maybe 50 or so pre recorded tapes i have, there are maybe 2 that do shed. i'm keeping and playing them anyway-every once in a great while. just have to clean a little more.

    Is this bad???

allenm, try using a fine grain sandpaper and very lightly scuff the surface of the p-roller. this will help it and capstan grip the tape better. and while at it, clean the heads, capstan, guides with at least 91% ioso alcohol on q-tips. this should be done very frequently anyway 'specially when...
