Let me see if I understand what you are trying to do. Are you trying to record your drum machine's pattern onto HS so you can alter the notes with HS? Or, are you writing the pattern with HS and just trying to use the drum machine as a sound module?

When you created the track, did you use (from the menu at the top) Insert>Midi Track? (Or maybe it's Track>Insert midi track, I'm not at home)
